Been an occasional lurker.  Recently tenured semi-old fart in engineering at Midwest R1 that transitioned from industry to academia too late in life.  It looks as though most people here do not link to their public life; I assume that the email address I registered with is not visible to forum members?

Only the VDSMs.  We get the special glasses (they come in his and hers).

Your professors were probably afraid of your galactic genius and did everything they could (behind the scenes) to thwart your hedginess.

Very distinguished senior members?  The learning the lingo links on http://chronicle.com/forums/index.php/topic,36344.0.html are broken...
Do the glasses help see through bogus student excuses too?

These might help.

I posted my first couple of questions yesterday after about 2 weeks of intense lurking in the job-seeking and interviewing discussion threads. This, following some campus visits for interviews, to get some help in coping with the intense anticipation and suspense the interviews created.

Didn't realize there was a forum to introduce oneself, so here I am. I want to share how grateful I am that these discussion fora exist. How could I have been not aware of them until 2 weeks ago, when the need to seek out commiseration and camaraderie amongst those in the job market in a similar situation as myself, finally led me here? Knowledge of these fora would no doubt have significantly (I think) improved my job applications and the interview experiences. If I don't make it in this round, there will be opportunities next year to apply the pearls of wisdom shared generously here.

Well, that was a rather long introduction. I look forward to all the fora have to offer, and as I become wiser and more experienced, look forward to contributing back in the years to come.

Well, to start, here's your newbie kit: a do-it-yourself rice krispies kit, a knitting pattern for a Klein bottle hat, and a year's subscription to JUGGLE Magazine.

Hi hi! Love the forums... But why do I get the feeling that I actually know every single other person here? It's creepy.

But hi!

Why is all the rum gone?

*Waves hello*

I am new to this forum. I recently left industry and starting teaching as an engineering lecturer at a private university in the south. My department chair sent me an article from this site, which I read and then immediately hopped over to the forums, where I wasted a ridiculous amount of time reading through threads.

I am so glad I found the "In the Classroom" part of this forum and to know that I am not alone with many of my frustrations. It's also so nice to read all the constructive ideas you all give to people like me who have no idea what the heck is going on, since I am a newbie at teaching.

Do you have to worry about tenure, or only teaching?  I jumped from industry to academia late in life and just survived the tenure process, but the stress was most unpleasant.
