Well done to all those being productive. I'm in the middle of moving hell, and haven't got anything done. Now all my books are going into boxes for a couple of weeks.

On the plus side, a top journal just sent me a reminder email asking me to send in an R&R that I'd despaired of finishing. This has inspired me to get back to it asap.

Congrats on the R&R, Porcupine. Hope that completing the revision and resubmission provides another kind of R&R as well.

My sympathies, putting all those volumes down for a long summer  nap.

Hi All,

My name is airball, and I'm a reference-aholic.

I'm in the final push to finish a book ms. I've got final drafts of all but one chapter written, and have sent proposals to my top choice of publishers. Fancy Shmancy UP has asked for my ms, so I'm doing something right.

My problem is this: I don't know when to stop reading. I work on medieval German basket weaving, and I've done all that reading, of course. And I've dipped into ancient and Reformation basket weaving, and French basket weaving. But it's a big world, and why am I stopping with Europe? Shouldn't I be reading about basket weaving in the Netherlands? And Italy? Russia? China? Basket weaving today? What if I miss something?

At this point there really is nothing I am going to come across that will change the shape of my argument. I'll occasionally find a book or article and say, "Hey, that's kind of cool" and put in another footnote. The problem is that there is no end. Really. There is none.

So when do I stop? Help me.

You should stop now, Airball.  Anything new that you find goes in the next book, not this one.

Second SecretWeapon. The most intoxicating procrastination is time spent on a deceptively busy but unnecessary task that you can do will in order to avoid what you are not sure is good at all.

Hi and welcome, Airball! Just to get the confusion out of the way: admittedly, it's been a loooong time since I was home, but the three countries named above used to be in Europe, too. Did I miss yet another memo ;)

Stop reading now. Finish manuscript now. Put all illegal material into a taped-shut shoe box, safe, or give to your least favorite relative to be retrieved only after your book is in print. I am a pro at this game, btw - I've finally convinced myself that all that really cool stuff that would really fit so very well over there, can.not.go.into.this.manuscript! And what do I do? I just opened a goody box from Amazon with five books that may be tangentially related and I'm sitting here reading. Not writing. Having a nifty new toy (Iris pen! Only the coolest thing ever!) does not help - reading and note-taking in one! How can I resist ... no, really ... how?

I am, however, almost done with the first article. I'll finish the draft tomorrow morning and then let it sit through July (working on second article).

I am *desperate* to hear about a paper I resubmitted after revision exactly three months ago.  The journal was pretty quick for the first round -- well under three months.  So now it's killing me to wait the usual three months -- and of course there's no guarantee they'll do the usual.

I'm coming to the conclusion that when stuck in a paper, one shouldn't aim for breakthroughs but ooze-throughs.

I'm done nothing but spin my wheels all day.  Bad news has me feeling despondent, and without collegial support, I don't know if I can get a draft of this paper written.  I need some feedback, but can't find a reader.

What a lost, unproductive day.

Hi - my name is Cat and I haven't done a stitch of work today.

Well, I've been in my study since about 7:30 am and the desk is cleaned up, moved to another end of the room, books and articles have been reshuffled (it does make more sense this way!), orphan notes have been entered into my Writing Notes doc. on google, the trash can is full, and FedEx says that my new home printer is on the truck for delivery, although the date is still for Monday.

Other than that - nothing. Not a word written.

On the plus side, the one article is finished in draft and will now stew for a month. Second article (the July project) is about a third done, but I got too polemic in it yesterday and had to take a break ;)

Sikora, if you can't find a reader, would it help to read the paper aloud? I don't have readers either (unless one counts reviewers, of course) and reading aloud sometimes helps to "hear" where the argument meanders too much, leaves out pieces, or it might even jiggle a new thought.

Qrypt - hang in there - the answer will come!

Just chugging away at bits and pieces here.  The main writing is mostly done, and I just have to polish and proofread and maybe add a few bits and pieces.

Unfortunately, I think conjugate gives good advice.

I met with my advisor today to talk about my latest paper. Surprisingly, most of his feedback is minor - with a good revising push this weekend, I think this mofo can be submitted on Monday. Oh, I'll be so glad to have this out of my hair!

Thanks! I got through the edits on pages 1-6 (of 18 pages of text) tonight, but now I take a break until tomorrow, when I will tackle the hardest edits with a fresh mind! Ah, I'm kind of loving the fact that no one knows I am back in grad school town, except for a very select few, so I have zero social obligations for the holiday weekend!

Hi, all. I hope the writing is coming along well.

I finally found the motivation earlier this week to get moving again on revising a paper that I'd like to send out for review. My goal is to have it done by August 15.

I'm spending today trying to re-work the introduction, which has been surprisingly time-consuming. Tomorrow will be concluding section, and after that I'll turn my attention to the main meat and potatoes of the paper. I have to admit to having a bit of Imposter Syndrome--I'm a modernist in a subfield that has grown increasingly postmodern in recent years--but I simply don't know how to engage in a theoretical language that I'm not sure I believe. We'll see what happens!
