Solid progress, Cat. Good for you. I, on the other hand, have been captivated by the allure of big bucks and cannot seem to resist prowling the grant sites. I must be a gambler at heart.

May I join in?
I'm working on a bear of an article. It's a short article, on a narrow topic, but somehow requires massive amounts of research into seemingly innumerable sub-topics.
I have a few other article-length projects on deck (all of which seem more appealing at the moment than the one on which I'm working, natch) and one submission out at a journal. And, of course, lurking in the background is The Book, which is on hold for the next few months while I muddle clear my head by turning to other things.

It's like you posted for both of us! I understand. I'm right where you are: One article under review, one short article getting all of my attention and requiring more work than I thought it would, a number of more attractive articles on the sidelines (though I'm sure they require more work than I used to think, too), and a book manuscript to work on.

Manuscript submitted yay!
Unfortunately, no rest for the wicked. Back to the other dissertation chapters.
I have new motivation though - this journal has a pretty quick turn around on reviews (it was 6 months from submittal to acceptance last time, including our time for addressing the reviews). If I don't defend before the reviews come back, then I will be forced to include the reviewer comments in my dissertation, which will probably push back the defense.
So on to the next one! Unfortunately field work this week is going to disrupt the mojo I had on the next article - I always have a hard time getting back into it after time away...

Another chapter has, if not bitten the dust, at least nibbled at it. I made a goodly number of changes, including improving the diagrams and rearranging the sections for better organization, and now it's on to another chapter.
Eventually this crap must come to an end, right?

Yay scampster and conjugate!
I feel like I need to be churning out articles, but really I need to finish a bunch of note-taking first. Then I'll be back in the fray.

Welcome, Arizona! And congratulations to Scampster and Conjugate!
Just dumped half of chapter two into chapter one and will now add the stuff to chapter two for which I made space. Finally got around to disassemble the topical article piles into "in chapter" and "for chapter" piles (meaning, I don't have to bother with the first ones again, because they are already integrated, but the second ones still must be used). The "this may work" table of contents with subsections is hanging next to my desk. Am having too much fun reading for chapters four and five in the afternoon, unfortunately. And I just dismissed a major author with one paragraph, basically asserting that everybody has read and cited him sufficiently for me not to bother. Yes, I know - he will have to appear. But, really, people - you mean we haven't all read him?
I wish these people would stop writing/screaming/annoying me for just enough time to finish this thing. How can I ever be done if they keep giving me data? I'll have to make a bumpersticker "Take a Break from the Hate! - I can't keep up!"

Haven't posted on here in quite some time, but I have good news! At least it's good to me: I got a resubmitted one paper, which means that I can now turn to two other papers before I hopefully get some downtime this summer. I really need it.
Congrats to all on your daily progresses and milestone accomplishments!

It's great to read about everyone's progress. Gotta say, it gives me motivation to get back on track and to stop gazing with great longing at a big stack of novels I wish I could read for the rest of the summer.
In the midst of finishing up revisions on an article and proof-reading something else, I need to get started on some grant applications that are due in October and November.

Wow! Everyone is doing so well and getting so much done! Congrats to all!
Here's a question for you all:
About a year and a half ago, I gave a paper at a conference and the person who organized the panel offered to serve as a reader if I expanded the paper into an article. Well, I have now. And I kind of want to take him up on his offer (he's really well known in the field and just had a really important book come out) but it's been a year and a half since I had any contact with him. So, would you email this person? And, if you would, what would you put as the subject line?
I'm really rather insecure about publishing, etc. I have one minor publication out but all my other submissions have been rejected. So I'm a bit nervous about sending this out, but he seemed to like the conference presentation. Arg.
I have two other submissions out this summer and I'm really, really hoping one of them gets picked up.

ufo_tofu: I would definitely recommend contacting this person, as long as you are fairly thick-skinned about feedback. I'd recommend something like MLA 2008: The favor of a review in the subject line. Then reintroduce yourself as if you don't presume that this person remembers you. Thank them for their feedback at the conference and ask if they would still be willing to comment on the paper before you finish it for submission. I'd also recommend that you indicate the time by which you hope to submit the article (e.g., "I hope to submit this to Journal X or Journal Y by October 1 and would like for the next draft to have the benefit of your review.").

Thanks Slacwriter! I like the subject line idea - I was trying all evening to think of how to word it without sounding like a stalker. I don't usually overthink/obsess this much, but for some reason this whole thing has me rather undone.

ufo_tofu: I agree with slacwriter...If someone knowledgeable about your topic volunteers to read your work, don't let the opportunity pass.
Well, I've been defeated by my bear of an article and have put it on hiatus. Normally I would not allow myself to jump ship in the middle of the project, but the research demands of the project were spiraling out of control and leaving me virtually paralyzed. The article in question is a spin-off of one tiny piece of my dissertation, which I only recently defended; it's become clear that I need a break from the whole project to recharge my batteries. I've turned to another article that was originally a conference paper from many years back. The long lag time means that I more or less have to reread all my original research, besides updating the scholarship, but I still like the topic and I feel much more positive and energized about the project. Onward and upward.

I just started my summer writing project today. I've been reading for weeks now, but I finally started to write. Now I remember why I *HATE* this part. I think I would have an easier time pulling out my own teeth with my fingers. I like the rest of the process, but the first draft makes me utterly miserable. I have 276 words, and I need to have 500 by the end of the writing day today.
