Has anyone done an NEH fellowship? Can anyone share experiences/day-to-day operations of these? I was accepted to one this summer and am not sure what to expect. Any dos and don'ts would be helpful!

I'm not sure that one can generalize.  I did a 6 week one for university and college professors, and it was great.  We had class 3x a week for 3hrs, we had several group activities planned (though one could always opt out), and we were close to a major archive for our topic.  I met some great people and got an essay if not a chapter out of the experience plus 6 weeks in a great location, while others made headway on book projects.

I'd do it again.

Do you mean a fellowship? Or Summer Seminar/Institute? If the latter, which? Seminars tend to emphasize individual projects more and leave more time for research and writing, while institutes schedule more events.

Oh, good point.
I was reading too quickly and/or thinking to slowly.
I did a summer seminar.

I am enrolled in a summer seminar as well. I am glad to hear there is time to do an independent project.
