So here's a new one for me- I was invited to give a talk at a local conference- one of the conference organizers called me personally several times to ask me to participate. I said if I could fit it into my calendar, I'd be happy to put together a presentation. Silly me, I didn't think to ask at the time if my conference fee would be waived (which seems reasonable for an invited presenter). I discovered the fee is $400, and contacted the conference organizer who invited me to speak to confirm that as an invited presenter my fee will be waived.

Here is the weird part:

The conference organizer didn't get back to me directly, but contacted my department chair (at least he cc'd me, which is how I found out) and asked my chair to pay my conference fee!
Has anyone ever experienced anything like this? What did (would) you do?

I would call the organizer and ask him WTF? If he is anything other than apologetic, bail.

Sign of what's to come?  ORT style business venture?  Should we all get on this gravy train?

That ship has probably sailed.  In the sciences, there are quite a few commercial ventures that organize conferences, which have high registration fees.  But they bilk the attendees (who are largely from industry/pharma), rather than the speakers.

I don't know of any conference that asks speakers who speak for more than 15 minutes or so to pay their own registration fee.

That seems bizarre to me.

Perhaps it depends on the field.  In the sciences, there are plenty of meetings with talks where the speaker pays for everything.  The exception is an invited talk, which is what the OP refers to.

And you thought being asked to speak meant that they cared what you had to say?

Blow them off.
