"white male majority"?  Does he really say that?  I thought women were 51% of the population.

I think white males are only about 35% of the population. Well, he's been wrong on other things.

Maybe he meant the majority of white males.  After all, back in the good old days, that was all it took to settle matters.

If anyone ever continues to take this guy's advice seriously, perhaps they could be directed to http://martynemko.blogspot.com/2008/06/curmudgeonly-musings.html

Sociologists refer to the "majority" as those who hold most or all of the power in a society.  That's how pale-skinned people in South Africa could still be the majority even though they were significantly outnumbered by people of more profound hue.  Majority has to do with privilege, not numbers.

That may be what Marty means when he discusses the "white" male majority, though he seems pretty dim.  I doubt he remembers Intro Soc.

I'm not sure he remembers yesterday, quite frankly.

Do you hail from Planet Hello Kitty?

It's like an action movie, but boring.

Nemko's latest contribution on how to land an academic job is not only largely cr@p, but could actually harm someone's job search if they followed his advice. Why do they waste space on this guy? He is obviously clueless about academia despite his status as a consultant and affiliation with Berkeley. Any CHE editors out there?  Hello? Hello?

The bad advice referred to is here:

I was just thinking that with his previous post about all the ways that society discriminates against men:
http://chronicle.com/review/brainstorm/index.php?id=565
he'd gone over the cliff.  For someone who styles himself a libertarian and take-charge-of-your-life advocate, he has a victim streak a mile wide.

I agree with betterslac about the need for CHE editors to look more closely at the credentials of CHE writers.  At the very least, they should provide more biographical information.

I'd like to hear from a CHE editor on this issue.
