Not Warts!  I swear!

I have a relative who is teaching at a CC.  Hu wants a FT position and thinks that a PhD in Creative Writing will help get hu a job with hu's institution.

Hu plans to "attend" the University of Manchester online PhD program.  I've told hu's family that I don't really think this will help hu much, but maybe I don't know what I'm talking about.

U of Manchester does seem to be legit and even really respectable, but has anyone heard about the online program?  Does anyone respect this kind of online degree?

Any thoughts?  Any Manchesterites out there?

Manchester is a member of the Russell Group of universities (which contains many of the top UK universities) and is generally a highly regarded university. The only thing I know about the humanities is that there was some controversy about the size of the salary paid to Martin Amis.

As stated University of Manchester is a well respected institution. However, in reading the link that you supplied it does seem that your friend will need to be on campus for the first year for research seminars. Perhaps there's more info that I didn't see.

Nothing wrong at all about Manchester (well, apart from the rain, of course :-), but I'd be much less surprised if your relative was thinking of going to Lancaster, k_g, as I know that they're open to the idea of doing the PhD in Creative Writing at a distance.
