With all due respect, perhaps one could simply stop visiting this thread if s/he is not interested or finds no "validity" in the data or arguments being presented?  There are others who would like to see this thread alive, beyond the concrete data-related issues involved.

The issue is not clear-cut to some of us, and what you may find offensive and meaningless may not necessarily be so to others.

I don't know who the others are, but if you want to discuss something about diversity, you will get further by 1. no defending the OP, who, if you actually read the thread, was extremely nasty and 2.  start a new thread.

I'm sensing an axe to grind on the OP's part.  Are you a minority who didn't get hired at BU, or somewhere similar, in the same field?

What's your beef with BU?

Why are you "sensing" that I have an "axe to grind", and not BU? Why don't you try to ask what's their "beef" particularly when the field of mass media/journalism/writing is abundant with qualified minorities with a few years of professional experience (along their bachelor's or master's)?

If these are the qualifications that you think should warrant serious consideration by BU for a faculty position, then that's the problem right there, not discrimination based on race or ethnicity.  A BA or an MA with several years of professional experience will NOT get you hired for a faculty position in my field, one of the ones represented on your list.   Without a PhD, any applicant, regardless of race, would be placed in the circular file and my school is not as highly ranked as BU.  So I can only imagine that they, too, are looking for applicants with doctoral degrees, perhaps combined with professional experience.

You yourself have not proposed any solutions.

I did!!

They should simply post a little disclaimer on their main faculty web page:

"We've been trying desperately to hire from two largest minority groups for a decade.  We've interviewed, we've advertised, but in the end we cannot persuade anyone from those two largest minority groups to take the job. However, we believe in our institution, and we believe that we will eventually succeed in hiring a more diverse faculty. Yours, College of Communication, Boston University".

If they'd do that you'd see how quickly would a "solution" found them.

If this is WC's idea of carefully constructed prose, it's no wonder s/he can't get hired by a communications department.  Even if he or she does have the required degree(s0 and years of experience, I would imagine that any communications/journalism faculty are required to write well.

I'm pretty sure the troll has long since moved on.  This thread can safely die a natural death, and no one would be the less for it.
