Interesting story that will be of interest to many here: A pair of married Georgia Tech profs left for UMinnesota, but never quit their GT jobs, simply continuing to draw their salaries and (if I understand correctly) even continuing to file expenses. http://www.ajc.com/metro/content/metro/atlanta/stories/2008/04/18/tech_0419.html?cxntlid=homepage_tab_newstab" Awesome. Among other things, this is a whole new possibility for the many posters here asking "when to notify?" How about never?

The wife's name is Julie Jacko. That must have some significance.

Nice going Georgia Tech, first they have the illegal credit card spending problem and now this. Who's asleep at the wheel in Atlanta?

I imagine they're headed to prison for fraud. These two have set themselves up for quite a dilemma: either lie on tax returns, or submit correct tax returns that document quite precisely the extent of violation of their Georgia contracts.
This is only because they were stupid enough to do it all within a single country. When I finally land a job in North America, I will be working on the same sort of delayed exit from my job in the UK.

There was a big splash ten or fifteen years ago about some professor in the sciences in the midwest who held down two tenure track positions at colleges a few hundred miles apart. He made tenure at both places before he was found out. He remains my hero.

This is as stupid as Spitzer's behavior. It seems like some kind of unconsious self destructive behavior of succesfull people, or I guess just plain arrogance/greed.

Well, I've seen the mighty and powerful hold positions at different schools on different continents. They're such big names, they don't really teach anywhere, just let their magnificence waft down onto the universities in question. Not that I blame them, but it is pretty stupid of the schools.
What caught my eye was the 130 publications. I know it's possible, and I don't know how long he's been in the field, but still...two jobs, and he publishes that much too? Anyone know the field? Are these likely to be co-authored, or do they include things like book reviews, or what? Or are they coming out of his ass too?

100+ pubs is fairly common in my field. The big names have 300-400.

There's a big name in my field who used to divide hu's time between three prestigious institutions on three continents - all the institutions knew about it and worked with hu to make it feasible. Sounds ideal to me, but only if I wasn't a parent.

If they double-billed on travel and expenses, this is probably a criminal violation. Otherwise, the wording of their contract becomes critical. Mine lets me do a certain amount of outside work, though would not permit a full-time job elsewhere. On reflection, I am not sure why not; if someone can fulfill the responsibilities of two jobs, perhaps they should be permitted to do so. - DvF

What's a 'publication'? A two-paragraph book review? 130 'publications' is a lot, especially for a mid-career professional. Most professional classicists would never approach this figure for a lifetime... unless you count the crap things like the 2 paragraph lit reviews, etc.

What's a 'publication'? A two-paragraph book review? 130 'publications' is a lot, especially for a mid-career professional. Probably mainly peer-reviewed papers with multiple authors. This is not that high a total in the sciences, though one of the couple is described as having a "Career" grant, which makes her fairly early in her career (as you cannot apply for these more than a few years out of the PhD). 130 papers is a good number for someone still holding a career grant. - DvF

A bit of Googling turns up lots of information: http://www.startribune.com/local/17945684.htmlIt's obvious from their salaries (400k at Tech and 500k at U Minnesota) that they are not classics scholars. She used to be Industral/Systems Engineering and Biomed Engineering at Tech, with a heavy dose of computer science thrown in. He was also Industrial/Systems Engin. but had gone the dean/administrative route. I think the number of pubs is pretty reasonable for a high-flyer in those fields. Brief bio on Minnesota's site says she got her PhD in 1993, so I'd assume he's the same.
