I've been offered a tt at WSU.  If I accept, I have two kids that will have to attend public HS school.  Any comments regarding the preferred schools, the quality of the schools, etc.  will be appreciated.

thanks in advance!

I hear the covens are pretty good if the sorting hat places your kids in one of the right ones.

Sorry, I don't have any actual information.

Live in Andover and commute (about 30 minute drive to WSU campus. Their public HS are both pretty good and smaller. There used to be a lot of gang activity in some of the urban wichita schools a few years back; I'm not sure if that's changed, but they're pretty big and I'm not sure how it's possible to get a good education when you're in a cattle call with 3000 other people.

Wichita (not Witchita, and not to be confused with Wichita Falls, TX) is in the flat part of Kansas, otherwise known as, well, Kansas. Wichita does have a nice school public school system, based on what some friends have told me. They did have a problem with their Lib. Arts dean but that was about 15 years ago, so surely that person is no longer there. The city's major employers are aircraft manufacturers and the university.

Well, the mascot is a grain deity of some kind...

(Kidding.  Wu-Shock is a giant pile of wheat.  A muscular, threatening pile of wheat with an evil grin.)

Yes, live in Andover.  The schools there are fine, the houses are inexpensive but well-built, and you're close to necessities like bookstores and good coffee.  You can take K-96 to Hillside and be on the WSU campus in about 15 minutes.

Just curious, if you're willing to say: what department?   I'm not at WSU now, but I have been in the past and know a fair amount about the place.  PM me if you wish.

And people make fun of the Cornhuskers!  At least that mascot is an actual human being!  :-)

Wichita is a pretty nice place to live.  I don't know anything about the public schools though, sorry!

Andover is strictly for the white-flight crowd. The schools are vastly overrated and are no better, frankly in my opinion, worse-- than the mostly average city schools (East is the best). Wichita has several older neighborhoods very close to the downtown and university and it's cheap as dirt. Crime is low, taxes are average, and mature trees are all in town.

In short, there is virtually no reason to live in suburb hell.

Which areas do you speak of? I am interested.

College Hill, South College Hill, Riverside, Sleepy Hollow, Lincoln Heights. For those with more significant equity, Eastborough. For those with a taste for the Victorian in a close-in neighborhood that is still revitalizing, Midtown.
PM me if you wish.

College Hill isn't as cheap as it used to be but those are all nice neighborhoods.

I haven't lived there for 7ish years but visit frequently. (In fact I'm writing from a café there.)

I'm a product of the Wichita public school (HS during the height of the gang crisis) and I got a great education (and in the middle of the gang problems). My brother and sister, however, had less positive experiences but I wouldn't necessarily fault the schools. I agree with the previous poster about Andover. When I was in high school Andover = close-minded, not diverse and not highly educated... although I hear it's getting better.I have family that works in USD 259 and would be more than willing to give advice/info on areas. PM me if you'd like some more info.

I'd say that Wichita is much better than you'd think. And you pretty much can't beat the real estate prices.
