short-term subletting
«

I'm going to be on a month-long research trip this summer, and just have found housing via Craigslist. I've never rented a short-term sublet from a distance before, though, and I'm hoping the collective wisdom of the list will yield sage council about how much to offer for a deposit, how to handle utilities and the like. The person I'm dealing with hasn't ever sublet, so we're united by our ignorance. Thus any help is greatly appreciated.
Apologies for cross-post to both travel and research, but I'm not sure which would be the most appropriate venue.
Thanks!

I sublet my apartment for 6 months. I think I did a 20% deposit on 6 months rent, and the balance was due when he moved in. All utilities were included. I think I included the phone, too. I had a flat rate and unlimited long distance. Overseas calls he had to pay for, though.
