I'm getting ready to head back to Istanbul for a conference. I find that I'm leaning toward staying in the same small hotel I normally stay in (near the Blue Mosque) which would involve a long-ish walk to Istanbul University.

I wonder if others do this... stay in a hotel they know ... even if it's not the most convenient to where they are going to be doing 'business'.

Yup. WH is particularly in favour of it if we're both along at an overpriced business conference, as it gives him plenty of down time.

In Istanbul--probably my favorite city in the world--I enjoy staying at the Kybele Hotel.  It's right in Sultanhamet, about a 15-20 minute walk from the university.  It's a beautiful, reasonably priced hotel that I can't recommend highly enough.
