Any experience with telecommuting spouse?

Hi all. Does anyone here have any experience with telecommuting? I have a TT offer that I've verbally accepted. The location offers very little opportunity for my spouse, but my new pay is competitive with his current salary and the cost of living is considerably less than our current area.
My husband wants to convince his current boss to try telecommuting. His company is allowed to do it, although no one in his immediate group telecommutes on a regular basis right now. We'll be about 2.5 hours away from his workplace. We've considered our budget and could get a pied-à-terre in the vicinity of the airport if his boss only agrees to part time telecommuting. His job involves about 40% field work so the office is already used to communicating with employees out and about on site.
I'm currently adjuncting and do all my prep work from home, so we're pretty experienced with protecting work time and space already. If anyone (or your spouse) has tried this, what did you say to the boss to convince them to allow it?

My spouse telecommutes. I think it works well because the position has clear objectives with easily measured criteria for success. There are clear client contact goals, with clear expectations for the resulting revenue stream - spouse also had the advantage of many years with the company on-site, so had already demonstrated non-slacker traits.
I would suggest looking at the job duties/description and show the boss how these can be measured without simply considering face-time.
