I am curious as to what most academics do for childcare at conferences.  Do you leave the kids at home?  Do you bring a spouse or sitter?  Do academic societies in your field help with childcare?  Does lack of childcare limit the number of conferences that you attend?

Thanks for any insight.

Depends on the conference.  Many of the giant conferences organized by the main disciplinary associations offer it (for a fee) as a matter of course.

I've some big babies giving presentations at mine.

Sorry.

Mine usually has Kiddie Corp provide babysitting services.  Hedgepiglet hasn't gone with me, so I've never used them, but I'm not so sure I would want to.  Whenever I've looked in, I've always seen a TV on, with some crappy video playing., but maybe it's not on all the the time.  They charge $9//hr (under 6 mo) and $7/hr (6 mo to 12 yr).

I've also seen parents taking their kids around with them, mainly in the exhibit and poster areas, not so much to the talks.

Your professors were probably afraid of your galactic genius and did everything they could (behind the scenes) to thwart your hedginess.
