Good university.
Very grey city.
Gets dark at 3pm in the winter.

Gets dark at 3pm in the winter.

And, more importantly, doesn't get light again in the morning until pretty close to 10am.

I was there for a summer conference.  It was interesting.  It got dark at about 11.30PM for a few hours.  There's local industry from North Sea Oil, and the downtown pubs seemed to be full of karaoke-ing oil workers.  It's 126 miles to Edinburgh, the nearest city of note.  It's a beautiful campus but after 3 days I was already bored with the town.

Well, like with most places, it depends on what you are interested in.

I like the city, but when I go there it's to get to smaller, towns like Peterhead or Fraserburgh so then Aberdeen is a "step up."  If you enjoy shopping, you will be making weekend trips to Edinburgh.

Aberdeen does get good visiting shows at the local theatre and the countryside is lovely, though nothing spectactular.  The Hills are a couple of hours away and worth the trip.

The university is very good.  The city's traffic, however, is really bad!  There is no bypass around the city and sitting there is rush hour ona friday afternoon can be terrible.

Also, for some reason, there is never enough hotel rooms available.  Don't know why, so things are filled if there's ever anything going on in town.  or- if flights are fogged in, as I was last February!

But the people have always been friendly and helpful to me.

Personally, I wouldn't mind living in Aberdeen though I would prefer a place like Stirling.

and yes, it is dark and can be grey, but I'm in Scandinavia where it's just as dark and grey in the winter!

Did my MSc in the Plant & Soil Dept at Aberdeen (BSc at Stirling) of the two I preferred Stirling - quieter, closer to Edinburgh.  Depends what you are looking for - For example, plenty of great trails in the Dee Valley.  We lived out of the city at Monymusk in one of Sir Archibald Grants cottages - short commute to the city but enjoyed living the village life.

As a Uni I found it OK the department played well together.

Is it true that Aberdeen real estate is surprisingly expensive, because the oil companies drive up prices?

But you'll have all the light you can handle in the summer.

For an idea of prices see the Aberdeen Solicitors Property Centre: http://www.aspc.co.uk/ In Scotland the Solicitors Property Centres act as a central point for advertising most of the properties for sale in an area.

I don't think the prices are much difference to where I am now living, in the North of England - though I am in one of the more expensive areas (I lower the tone).

And what normative says. I miss being able to get in from work at 6 pm and spend 5 hours walking in the hills without needing a torch (a bit further south than Aberdeen).

Definitely. I'm not in Aberdeen, but far enough north that I can golf until 10 or 10:30 p.m. if I want to. (At 10:30, you just have to hit the ball and hope you find it as you stroll down the fairway).
