May would also be preferable over August (unless you are an optimist and hoping for sunshine - might get it in August, probably won't in May). The British schools are on holiday in August and many of the nice countryside places are both packed with little Sophies and Edwards (rich families - the Wayne and Jades go to Spain, which is cheaper) and much more expensive for accommodation. Plus, if it does get warm, London can be pretty uncomfortable if that's one of your preferred destinations, as although the temperature is not that high (maybe 90, 95? I can't do Fahrenheit!), it never gets very high so nowhere has air conditioning.

More like 75 or 80 in Fahrenheit!

I agree. I went rollerblading in Hyde Park one December. We were all just wearing t-shirts and very light jackets. (I'm not saying we were naked from the waist down, I'm just saying we weren't very warmly dressed.) It was a gorgeous sunny day.
