I’m a senior researcher (with a PhD) working at a US university; I am a relatively new employee.  I have been told by my hiring manager that she will not allow me any flexibility with regard to working from home; in other words I have to be in the office from 9 to 5 (like the admin staff).  Ironically my hiring manager and her deputy both abuse their working from home privileges in that they are seldom on campus; aside from meetings, interaction is generally by email only.  I am also the only member of staff with a PhD who has been told categorically that I cannot work from home.  I am new to the USA – is this normal?

In general terms I would say it is not normal.  However, in research labs (science) there is a variety of cultures, from totally flexible to more controlled.  In general, when people are first hired, their boss will expect to see them.  After/if trust and productivity is established, then many will not care if they see you or not. 

But it is not clear what kind of position you are in.  Is the hiring manager a person in HR ?   If so, her interaction with you would normally end when you are hired.

Well... you're new and I would assume that they want to make sure that you're actually doing the work before they give you the flexibility to work from home.

where r u from? i smell something about discrimination,you should research and got more infomation then  you can anwser your question,and make correct dicision. it is easy to you right? you are senior researcher (with a PhD) :-)) kidding no seriously.
