I just re-enacted the scene from Napoleon Dynamite in which Napoleon improvs the dance performance to Jamiroquai's Canned Heat. http://youtube.com/watch?v=uIf8y0h3lH0I did it in my bathrobe, in my kitchen while my lunch was cooking. Gotta stay sane on Day 3 of Dissertationpalooza '08. What do others do to keep the flow when the writing gets tough? New strategies welcome!

Last week I went to IKEA to spend 3 solid hours daydreaming about life after grad school (very therapeutic).
I'm going lap swimming this afternoon. Clears the mind. The gym has a hot tub too :-D

Sometimes I go out for dim sum, hijack the dim sum cart, and run around the restaurant yelling "Pooork buns!!!! Pork BUNS!!!".
It helps.

I cook and pretend I don't have work to do. Lately I've been doing a LOT of baking.
I've also been known to find inventive reasons for going to the grocery store. Like, "hmm, we don't have any paprika - I'd better go get some because you never know when you're gonna need some paprika".
The grocery store is my IKEA since there isn't one where we live.

I really needed a good laugh. Okay, ahem... back when I was a grad student... I did an awful lot of baking. I also like to sort socks.

ChaChaCha, you do NOT. I don't believe it. I'm going to try it and see what happens. Don't want to get booted from my local dim sum spot though, hmmmm. They are hard to come by in this neck of the woods.
Geophile and ABDG, I know what you mean. An emergency ponytail situation just interrupted me. I "desperately" needed new ponytail holders, which involved driving across town in rush hour (I secretly knew it would take forever).
Secretweapon, glad I could give you a laugh! Baking, huh? I think I'll stick to dancing. I fear not being able to fit into my suit pants if/when I get The Call.

Cooking, cooking, cooking. And baking and cleaning up the house. When I'm feeling particularly bad, playstation. But I'm trying to limit that one.
What about the Emergency Trips to the Library that could totally wait until the next time you're on campus? I'm famous for those, too.

Well, of course, there's always reading and posting in the fora for hours instead of writing. That's always my standby.
Emergency situations requiring immediate attention? Would that be cleaning the bathroom floor with a toothbrush, mucking out the cat's litter box, or doing three weeks worth of laundry?
God, we lead such exciting lives.

I refinished a dresser during my final push. A desire for craft/woodworking that I had never had before, or since (but the dresser sure is purdy!).

After getting bored with cooking ("Hey, I should make dinners for the whole week" "(Later in the week)"Oh no, all of my dinners are already made, why don't we do some baking?"), I have moved on to making jewelry.
Now I literally make some earrings and a necklace to match whatever I am going to wear the next day...this is even though I will not be leaving the house the next day. Yes, I sit around the house very over-accessorized. Also, sometimes I have to drop everything and go to the craft store because I may be running low on blue beads.

There's something about America's Next Top Model marathons that makes thesis-writing seem oh-so-unimportant. ...I only wish I was kidding.

I threw gel deodorant across the room and cursed my advisor to the fifth generation. Since I had to clean up the mess and my advisor is fifty with no children, this did not help.
I did lots of swimming, water aerobics, any excuse to take the glasses off and be far away from the paper and computers...
