I don't know if a posting about this article has been started already, so I started this.

I just wanted to comment that when I was an undergrad (early 1980's) there was a woman who petitioned successfully to be allowed to work out during a "men's only" gym time (one hour in the evening).  The men's arguments were similar to the women's in this article.  They felt more comfortable if women weren't around during their workouts.  Personally, I always was able to increase my weights by 10 -20 lbs if women were present.

It's interesting to see how times and attitudes have changed.

With no replies after three days, looks like it's a non-issue.

Please learn the difference between "it's" and "its."  I'm sorry, but "it's" is not a possessive!

I actually was thinking about this yesterday...I guess I had to digest the article. Some of the guys at my pool are so obnoxious I almost want to propose a women's only swim time. There is one woman at my pool who swims in full hijab, and she gets there really early --like when they open at 6-- to avoid the men (and women, I suppose) who stare.

I'm sympathetic to the idea of a woman-only gym or time, but I think it's problematic for a lot of reasons.  Firstly, historically "separate but equal" has never quite worked out.  Secondly, if the people who propose women's-only gyms or times aren't also willing to support a men's-only gym/work out time, it does present a bit of a double standard.  (And I say this as a staunch feminist who has seen her fair share of obnoxious male behavior at gyms.)  I *do* think that many gyms need to do a heck of a lot more in the way of responding to sexual harassment and other inappropriate behavior.  Those who behave in the manner described by Bibliothecula need to be removed and barred from returning.  A gym is not (or should not be) a frat house.

I'm with Yemaya.  Gender segregated sessions for some gym things could be a good idea, but it has to work both ways and be enforced.

Some of the guys at my pool are so obnoxious I almost want to propose a women's only swim time.

This might not work so well if you're faculty and the gits are students, but my favorite tactic for a**wipes who leer or make rude comments is to point at their crotch and laugh.  And, as you walk by, let them hear you utter the phrase "come on, it's not that cold in here" to a gym buddy.

Yeah, I did that one once, and it worked to perfection:  he was goaded into whipping it out.  And, yeah, he won the argument, but I didn't mind a bit.

But on another note, I'd like to hear more about your students who share a single crotch.

I don't know whether I'm intrigued, disturbed, or amused.  I'm probably all three at once as I often am around here.

I finally saw this story in the NYT. To them, and to my fellows here, I have a new mantra. Please repeat after me:
Just because it happens at Harvard does not make it news...

Quiet, heretic!  Everyone knows that there are really only three American universities: Harvard, MIT, and Bob Jones.  They get to decide what constitutes news.  You are deluded if you think otherwise.

P.S.  Stop reading the NYT.  You'll be happier and can still be informed about real news by reading weekly or monthly summaries while the filler fluff falls by the wayside.  If real, fast-breaking news happens (think Katrina or 9/11), you have to be in a cave to miss it.

I'm afraid you're quoting a comment of mine that was nothing more than my inner pedant speaking.

So I should be amused at the easily misread sentence?

That's my hope.  If indeed yemaya knows Siamese twins who are joined at the crotch, then perhaps "intrigued" would be the better response.
