I've been meaning to update this thread with a thanks to notaprof.  I used the recommended service and while it very definitely wasn't cheap (regular govt fee + expedited govt fee + document service's fee + overnighting costs) , it was amazingly fast.  From the time I Fedexed my materials to them until I was holding my new passport was exactly 48 hours.  Based on their website, I had expected the processing to take approximately three business days, so I was surprised that they did whatever needed to be done in an afternoon.

It definitely helped my peace of mind not to be sending my documents and credit card number to an unknown entity, so while there were some cheaper options listed on the web, I'm not complaining.

Thanks again, notaprof.

Glad you're all set Odessa.  Have a great trip.  It does put a pinch on the pocketbook and this reminds me to go renew my passport which expires tomorrow just so I don't get caught in last minute mode myself if an unexpected opportunity comes up.

Safe travels.  I hope you are not on American.  They've been cancelling flights like crazy this week.  I have to fly them next week and I hope they get their equipment up to snuff agian.

Have a great trip!  It is amazing at how strict they are getting about ID.  Especially since it is not like terrorists havn't had false passports/ documents for years or anything.  Oy!

Yeah the screenings are so effective.  A couple of weeks ago I had to drop my daughter off at LAX and just before we got to the point where you go right for departures or left for arrivals the traffic was at a standstill, not moving at all for the cars heading to departures, but all clear towards arrivals.  It was getting near the end of the comfortable time frame for my daughter's flight so I just decided to get out of the line for departures and drop her off at the arrivals section where she could just go upstairs to check in.  We zipped right through and she was on her way, and I was back on the freeway in two minutes.  On the news that night I learned that there was some sort of scare and they were inspecting all cars as they entered the airport.  Good thing it wasn't me they were looking for.
