na na na na, na na na na , hey hey hey, goodbye

« on: March 08, 2008, 09:50:59 AM »

I know this has been discussed before and I am searching past forums, but then we all know how the search engine works...

So, does any one have a link to a reasonably priced academic gown website?  Used is fine but more importantly, I need to order a new hood and Jostens (ugh) won't even let me get to the cap and gown location on their website.

And just as an aside - why is it that MFA theatre hoods arre brown - I mean, brown, yuck.  Anyone have any insight into the selection of hood colors?  Anyone else hate the color of their hood?

This probably wasn't what you meant, but I just did a quick search on Ebay (for "graduation robe") and 23 hits came up. Prices seem quite affordable.

Other that that, I know not much.

I really want to buy my university's custom regalia now that I will have a job where faculty are expected to attend commencement. It's $800+, though, because of the custom parts, which the knockoff robes won't duplicate, so I will likely hold off awhile, unless the other newish hires own theirs. I'm frugal, as long as I'm not the only one in a dingy rental.

Brown is the color for the arts, I believe.

Just a quick note:  I didn't have much money when I got my Ph.D., but I was told that regalia was used three or four times a year at the SLAC where I'd been hired, so I bought the cap and the hood, and one of those cheap, $25 gowns not meant for Ph.D.s.  After a few years on the job, I convinced a retiring faculty member to sell me his gown for very little money, and he says he loves the idea that it continues to be used in convocations and graduation ceremonies even though he's not there.

You mean he wasn't planning on being buried in it?

I'm thinking of being stuffed, dressed in academic regalia, and placed at the front of my classroom.

Your professors were probably afraid of your galactic genius and did everything they could (behind the scenes) to thwart your hedginess.

That's so cool!  What a great tradition.

I have been searching all the sites and think I have found something.  At this point I am just getting the hood - I will hold off on the gown until I have more disposable income!  My U's gown is also custom so it is spendy.  I think I will see what the look at the new school is and decided then - rent for the next year's events.  I hope I don't need one first week or so - my current SLAC has a full robed opening service teh first week of school.

One more thing to add to the list of things to find out.

My cap has been sitting on Yorick's skull in my office for the past few years and has gotten pretty dusty!

I found some site on the internet that made me a hood with (discipline and school colors) and sent a cheap mortarboard hat and cheap doctoral gown (with stripes) all for less that $100.  I only wear it once a year for 2 hours so I don't really care what it looks like.  I was paying $30 a year to rent so I got a good deal.....

There's a gown hanging in the closet where I hang my coat that some alumna left to the school to be passed on to a poor, preferably female, preferably minority new graduate. You might check with alumni associations. Those people have all sorts of resources.
