Smashing, absolutely smashing.

We'll have to invite him to the May (?) New Haven meet-up at Pepe's.

That video of Pres's tap dance on youtube is nice, but his dance is too brief. I hope he can dance the entire semester at Yale.

WOW... what a nasty thing to say. First of all I'm REALLY getting sick of people bashing the wives of politicians when those wives are more than arm candy. Cherie BOOTH Blair is an EXTREMELY successful Queen's Counsel in the UK. As for her interests in alternative medicine... well.. a LOT of people have such an interest and to call them insane is indeed an insane thing to say.

Apparently, Blair's course will look at the role of religion in world/Middle East affairs.  So are Blair's personal religious views sufficient qualifications to teach a course at Yale?

Interfering with the NHS to the extent of forcing them to pay for magnet wraps as a cure for wounds is not just an "interest in alternative medicine".  Had Blair merely been an eccentric woman who for personal reasons decided to wear her magnetic "bioelectric shield" herself (as she does), or give her husband's hair and toenail clippings to voodoo healers (as she has), or put her spiritual life in the hands of a Rasputinish-guru like Caroline Caplin (which she did), then I would merely have referred to her as "loopy" (or more likely not brought her up at all).  She becomes fair game as a public figure when she opts to use her position to try to impose this crap on the public science infrastructure.

It has nothing to do with being a candidate's wife.  I will happily call any public figure "insane" who advocates wearing foil shields to protect against electromagnetic radiation from mind-controlling aliens.  If you don't like the term "insane". I will happily substitute "bats*** crazy". If you want me to acknowledge her success as a QC, I can say "bats*** crazy lawyer" but somehow that doesn't sound better. - DvF

The sad thing is that we can't also label as "insane" all of the public figures who advocate, legislate, and generally impose on the public ideas that have their origins in conventional religions.

Someone needs to make sure these Yale kids get access to copies of old episodes of "The Now Show" (BBC R4 satire, formerly vicious with Blair and still vicious with Prince Phillip), before Blair gets there.  If they get the satire first, they'll never be able to listen to Blair without hearing the voice of Hugh Dennis.

I second the Now Show recommendation. Podcasts are available at http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/comedy/nowshow.shtml. Funnier than Wait Wait Don't Tell Me, I think (though only half as long). Empyrean_spouse & I went to the recording last Thursday, in fact - well worth it as there's a lot of material that doesn't make it into the show.

When I saw that headline about Blair teaching religion at Yale, I had to double-check today's date to make sure April 1 hadn't accidentally come round without me noticing.

Blair wrote the preface to an academic book on Socialism(s) years ago--I think years before the war in Iraq.

Maybe Blair can teach Socialisms again at Yale.

Oh dear, you've done it now, DvF.  I'm afraid another forum brouhaha over the cultural construction of mental illness is in the offing.
