Sorry if this has been covered before. Can people please post how long they waited between preliminary conference or telephone interviews and invitations to visit campus for second-round interviews?
Thank you!!
I am waiting by the phone hoping one or two more campus visits come through, perhaps pointlessly at this late date.

Hi anywho,
I have to say, it really varied. One place offered me a second round interview within hours of the phone interview. Another place (and they warned me ahead of time) had to run it by the dean, and it took nearly three weeks to go from phone interview to campus visit invite.

Almost 2 months. But it did lead to an offer.

Again, usually 1 month in my MLA field. With my observation of the wiki in my field, I find this (1 month wait) happens to other applicants too.
I did have one one-week wait (within 5 days) from a phone to an invite to campus from a SC, but that search ended up to be very irritating. (I do not want to specify the irritation) I just learn the lesson from this short wait: a short wait, for 5 days, does not mean anything positive. It does not mean the SC is efficient.
A normal wait for 1 month is normal. To wait for 5 days only is abnormal.

Well, I'm now 16 days out from my preliminary interviews. From what it sounds like from this thread, there is still a slight possibility that another call might come in in the next week or two. Fingers crossed...good luck to everyone else who is waiting by the phone.

To clarify a bit more: In my field, the phone interviews were generally in December. And the invites to campus came in January. So the 1 month wait includes the Xmas and New Year holidays.

anywho, I think we're in the same field (arts), and I have only had one campus interview from CAA materialize right after CAA. . .one campus interview was scheduled before CAA. I have heard a couple of schools contacting my refs for more info, but not a peep out of a couple of other schools. Not sure what kind of sign to read from this, as it's technically only been two weeks since CAA. your thoughts?

Hi Maggie -
Well, I'd say that either the SCs are still deliberating, or that they've already passed us over. Which is accurate? I don't know.
I'm just trying to keep busy preparing for the visits I do have.
On the bright side, the visits I do have are to locations I would be excited to settle in permanently, while the CAA interviews I am still waiting for word on, while great faculty positions in some cases, are in locations that would be hard for me to accept long-term. So looking on the bright side, to NOT get those campus visits potentially saves me from a painful trade-off: a good job vs. professional advancement in the region I am now living in.
Unlike almost all other disciplines, opportunities for recognition in our field are quite location specific. Being far from those particular areas does appear to take a toll on the careers of many, many people in our field.

Maggie and Anywho,
I'm also in the arts and awaiting two call-backs after CAA. In my experience finding my current position (six years ago) the invitations for campus visits came shortly after CAA or were preceded by a phone interview rather than conference interview. In one case I was invited directly to campus without an initial interview.
One of the schools I am waiting on told me it would be a few weeks; however, I'm giving up hope by the day. And my inquiry email yesterday to the SCC has gone unanswered, which may be a bad sign.
Re: location – yes, very important in our field. But perhaps equally important is teaching load. I'm within three hours of four major northeastern cities, which was a big factor in my acceptance of current position, but with a 4/4 teaching load and expectations of being on campus five days per week and frequent participation in weekend recruiting activities it is very difficult to get work/research done during the semester, let alone getting into the cities to promote my own work. So a position at a research-oriented school further afield may not be such a bad thing.
Hope this helps, and good luck to you both.

And just to clarify – No, I'm not looking for a new position because of a tenure issue. I was just awarded tenure but occasionally apply for positions that will better support my work/research.

Yes, I agree about location. It is important to be in the mix with other active workers. However, being from a rural area, I appreciate the lure of the local when it comes to "mid-sized" to smaller cities. In fact, I find it easier to get my work done. Plus, one can buy a house or get out in the country quicker if one lives in a non-major-metropolitan area. Now, back to the thread at hand. . .I am SO tempted to write this one search committee I had an interview with at CAA. Haven't done that. . .yet. . .must. . .not. . . right?

No doubt some things are easier in rural setting.
Re: writing to SC – I did (yes, I'm impatient) but have not gotten an answer, which has left me feeling worse. So I'd probably hold off.
