short-term housing in New Haven, CT?

Does anyone have suggestions for finding short-term housing in or near New Haven, Connecticut? I'll be spending a week or so at Yale later this year, and so far, the only lodging options I've located are either (a) prohibitively expensive, or (b) totally scary.
My last-ditch plan at this point is to stay with a friend in New York and to commute in by MTA train every day, but at over 100+ minutes each way, that option isn't particularly appealing at this point.

Have you tried the Hall of Graduate Studies? Also there is a housing office that might be able to put you in touch with people who have rooms to rent. I stayed in a nice place on the water for a few weeks once-- reasonable and on the bus route (though that was 20 years ago).

I wouldn't do the NYC commute thing. If anything, look outside of New Haven (places like Shelton, Naugatuck, Ansonia are usually pretty decent) and commute in from there. It will take less time and be far less frustrating.

Try renting in West Haven. They have cute little houses right on the Sound.

When I was in New Haven for research three years ago, we stayed at the Omni. They have (or did have) a special rate for anyone there to do research at Yale. If I remember correctly, the rate was $85 per night.

I stayed at the Graduate Club (which is right on the Green) when I was in New Haven for a month working at the Beinecke in the spring of 2000. I think I paid about $600 for the month. It was perfectly decent and cozy.

I'm sure it's more now, but it was a great place to stay and about a five minute walk from everything.
