Am thinking of applying to a position at the community college there. The town seems small, but Spokane is nearby. I'm single, 40's, no kids, not real sporty. Will this town fit me?

What do you like to do? What are some examples of places you would love to live?

Northern Idaho is gorgeous, a real four-season paradise. Property is getting expensive in many places, but there are little towns where you get a place reasonably, especially for one person. Tons of outdoor opportunities, which I take it do not interest you?

Spokane is my favorite smaller city. It is the biggest city between Seattle and Minneapolis so it has many more cultural amenities than you might expect. And decent airline connections to the bigger world.

While traveling I met a really cool guy from there who swore that it was a blast to be there post-college: really attractive singles, down to earth. It might be below your demographic, but just thought I'd throw it out...

CDA has gotten pretty upscale lately.  Lots of new condos and second homes for the folks in California.  It is indeed spectacularly visually stunning with the mountains all around and the remarkable lake.  Wildlife is everywhere if you keep your eyes and ears open and know where and when to look.  For the longest time, the Aryan Nations was headquartered right outside of town, but have since gone away (that's a long and interesting story...).  If you like long cold winters, north Idaho is the place.  Lots of outdoors activities; skiing (both downhill and cross country...), snowshoeing, snowmobiling, fishing, hunting, birding, hiking, camping, etc...

About Spokane... I disagree with LarryC about how wonderful Spokane is.  I lived in Moscow Idaho for 14 years and came to know Spokane well.  Aside from Manito Park and the Falls, Spokane is a pit.  Dirty, somewhat dangerous downtown, many homeless, alcoholic drifters, and maybe three reasonable restaurants (well, that should open the door to someone saying "... no, there are five good restaurants...").  The Opera House occasionally has a good concert.  For my money, there's more interesting things to do in Moscow/Pullman.

But hey... you pays your money and you takes your chances...

You're on!  Shall we say snowballs at noon at the Japanese Garden in Manito?  I'll be the guy wearing a red carnation on my heavy overcoat with gloves, boots, and a big old hat...

No, let us make it fighting with long staffs on the pedestrian bridge over the spectacular Spokane Falls, like Robin Hood and Little John but with the threat of watery death to the loser. Our we could joust on our mountain bikes on the Columbia Plateau, Centennial, or one of the other great bike trails in Spokane and northern Idaho. No, I've got it, we stalk one another like Ninja assassins in the wonderful new Museum of Arts and Cultures in the historic Browne's Addition neighborhood. Or should we do it at Auntie's Bookstore, the three story independent bookstore in the heart of Spokane? Or we could have an eat-to-the-death contest at Luna, or the Elk Diner, or the Riverview Grill, or Mizuna, or Clinkerdagger's, or any of another dozen excellent restaurants I could name.  Or we could simply brawl at one of the Saturday clearance sales at REI, where our fighting would hardly be noticed among the crush.

Spokane has so many great opportunities in this regard.

So Larry, can we summarize your position as "Spokane, a nice place to die?"

They don't call it "Spoklahoma" or "Spokompton" for naught.  Major class separation/struggle happening there all the time.
