When I got mine I sent them a certified copy of my passport. Got the local solicitor to photocopy, and sign the copy of, every page. Cost me a tenner.

A couple of years on and the same solicitor did this for a work colleague at my request. £20 that time.

OK I finally decided to go ahead and shell out the 655 quid to get the Brit citizenship thingy. Only thing... they say that it takes 14 weeks and I have to send in my American passport when I apply.

There isn't a 14 week period in the next year that I don't have to travel.

Is there a pricier, expedited version, where you go in person?  There is for work visas.

In order to educate/employ non-EU students/staff, the University will have to purchase one or more licenses from the Home Office. We will be required to report to the Home Office if they fail to attend for more than 14 days. Non-compliance may result in the licence being withdrawn and all non-EU staff and students being required to return to their home country.

I'm still trying to wrap my brain around this. What if the university doesn't buy a license--what happens? What on earth are we supposed to do about PhD students, who aren't required to "attend" anything? I don't even want to think about how The System might keep tabs on non-EU staff...

Weirdly, no matter how many variable (and complicated) keywords one types into the Home Office website search function, 148 records are presented as containing that set of keywords. 148 records, every time.
And nothin' about this license thing.

Mega-weirdly, their A-Z list contains no entries beginning with "E". The most common letter in the English language, and they have no entries.
Is anyone else hearing that special horror film music right about now? The music that plays when the zombies are just about to show up?
