Do Chair Searches progress faster/slower?

I have heard (and yes, I'm generalizing) that chair searches often progress faster because there are fewer candidates. I'm curious because I applied for a chair position in which the date for reviewing files began on Jan. 3rd; at least this is what the ad/subsequent confirmation letter said.
Alas, we're into February and I've heard nothing, which I know isn't a great sign. I just want to know one way or the other---oh, doesn't everyone? Of course, at the same time I am presently on a search committee and we're just getting around to calling references and had an earlier deadline than the abovementioned chair position.
Just wondering if anyone has any experience with dates/deadlines/etc. dealing with chair searches; I have only been on Asst. Professor searches. With a start date that's a month to six weeks earlier than other positions, I thought perhaps that the search committee would progress quicker than other committees. Wrong? Right? Of course, I know it all depends, but what say you?

I have participated on many faculty searches and a couple of chair searches. At least at my institution, there has not much difference in timing.

I was chairing a dept. chair search and we had to cancel due to budgetary problems--but I sent letters out when I knew the search was cancelled. Anything like that happening in your search, OP?

It's like an action movie, but boring.

I'm on a SC for a chair in another department at the moment and it seems to be going more slowly than an entry level search would. I haven't determined yet if the chair of the SC is dragging things out on purpose, or if this is just how he regularly does things.

Nope--unfortunately, one day after I posted, I got a rejection letter. Oh well....not meant to be.
