I am contemplating a big ol' mass of chili. I often put curry powder in my chili because it gives it a little extra zing.
Are you certain you're not really English, conjugate? Grilled cheese sarnies, curry powder in your chili, it all looks remarkably suspicious to me . . . next thing you'll be saying that you like Marmite! Never had Marmite. I'm sure I'm not English, however. Perhaps the taste is genetic?

Not exactly dinner, but I just finished baking the prizes for the student GPS based scavenger hunt on campus tomorrow. Brownies and cookies, some with dark chocolate and English toffee bits and some with walnuts and chopped up Rolos.
Asked the spouse to sample a bite when they were warm. Asked if I should leave brownie for her tomorrow. "Oh god no! You don't give a drug addict a little bit of crack and carry a huge stash out the door." Funny.

My mom's meatloaf recipe (still the best ever, rest her soul), smashed red potatoes, steamed carrots. Homey comfort food eaten in front of the fireplace.

Yummy! I always get so hungry when I see what everyone else is cooking. Profxfiles your mom's meatloaf sounds delicious. And I wish I was in your kitchen isotope. Your cookies and brownies must smell and taste fabulous!

Arugula salad tossed with yogurt-dill dressing - whatever.
I made the yummiest not-banana split tonight: B&J strawberry cheesecake ice cream, local creamery "special reserve" dark chocolate ice cream, fresh strawberries, *hot fudge, whipped cream w/a pinch of cinnamon, and a cherry on time.
*This sauce took for-ever to make, but it was similar to the dark, thick and gooey stuff I got at the ice cream shoppe in my grandparents' neighborhood.
On preview: where are the brownies?

Tomorrow's: lamb shank, sweet potato fries and roasted tomatoes. Maybe rocket/arugula on the side.
For the lamb shanks I am open to suggestions. They look nice and fatty - can I get away with roasting them? I was hoping to stick cloves of garlic in them, brush with a glaze of nice balsamic vinegar, redcurrant jelly and a little olive oil + chopped rosemary, then roast on low. However, would they be better braised? If so, any suggestions?

MMM, lamb shanks. If you can roast legs of lamb, I don't see why you can't roast the shank, especially if it is quite fatty. I've always braised mine but I can't find the recipe - but basically, with some wine, some broth, a few handfuls of pearl barley, and some veggies (carrots, onion, etc), plus herbs and maybe a spoonful of tomato paste to boost the sauce. Simmer on low for a few hours.
Last night was leftover curry. Tonight will probably be pasta with tomato sauce from a jar. Tomorrow had better be grocery shopping.

last night the boyo was going with friends to the Nutcracker so Dado suggsted a nice dinner with just the two of us.
We have pretty limited choices in little town and decided to go to Applebees (I wanted the tomato soup). Now I have to say - we usually try to go to locally owned places but in new town that has been a real challenge if we want a medium priced dinner (no problem if we want to spen a lot of money).
I ordered a steak - it was unedible. You couldn't even taste the meat it was so over marinated - I sent it back and got a dinner salad - that was almost as unpalatable.
I mean seriously - how hard is it to cook a steak?
Applebees is definetly off the list of resturant options!

Yeah, unless you want boring fried food. Hubby calls it "Crapplebee's."

Yeah, unless you want boring fried food. Hubby calls it "Crapplebee's." At one point their advertising (I forget how it was worded) seemed to be saying, "It's not the greatest food, but you get more of it for your money!" Just what I have always wanted - more inedible food than I could have gotten at a more expensive inedible food restaurant. I put Friendly's in the same category as Applebee's. The two worst meals I have ever had were at Friendly's and Applebees. I'll have to admit, I have only been to each place once. It was so bad, I wasn't willing to give them a second chance.

Dinner Party Time
IMPROMTU TO GO "TO DO"*
Food: Invite friends or accomplices to bring their favorite "carry out" restaurant meal (no drive thru or tofu, please) to be shared with other guests. This is a great opportunity to use BOGO's or 1/2 off coupons, etc. and, also, don't get too, too ethniky.
Beverage: BYOB (now ask yourself, "What wine goes with anything?")
G&R [garnish-relish]: To be furnished by host
Dress: Late to Class casual i.e. raincoat and/or skivies/PJ's and/or flipflop/crocs
Entertainment: Responsibly DJ'd and/or KJ'd Oldies or Karaoke
