As with everything nothing is always as bad as it seems. Hence, what is right with HBCU's? -Thurgood Marshall -Jessie Jackson -Martin Luther King -Oprah Winfrey -Toni Morrison Just to name a few... The UNCF website ( http://www.uncf.org/aboutus/hbcus.asp) lists a hosts of proud HBCU graduates and there are so many more who do not enjoy the celebrity, but make great contributions to the world. The most sought after University president is a proud graduate of an HBCU. UMBC President. Check it out for yourself. I suggest, for those of you who wish to proclaim the greatness of HBCU's drop your comments here. There are also fine faculty at these institutions. renowned scholars who have chosen to teach/research at HBCU's. It is all part of a collective. |

Well sheinthespirit, this shows you how much people who talk about 'what is wrong with HBCUs' acutally know about HBCUs. All universities, as you cited, have good and bad. But it seems that the negative nancys' on this board can only think of the highly publicized bad things to talk about. These boards are as lame and inane as any discussion board you might come across that is populated by less 'educated' minds. What a shame. I can't believe I used to think higher ed was different.

One thing is evident about the boards, if there is something positive to be said about diversity/HBCUs/or any other 'inclusion' topic, there is likely to not be a lot of discussion.
Some of the topics on the forum make me think, "Weren't these the same questions that American society was asking in 1865?"
The more things change, the more things stay the same.

What's right with HBCUs is the students.... what's wrong with the ones where I worked was the administration. I loved working with the students. They were extremely hard working and interested in the subject matter.

What's right is that faculty really care about the students. So its not only about teaching them the subject matter in the course but also teaching them about life.

For minnesotan's sake I will say to him/her like I tell me students: Do your research and then come back for a proper discussion.
Glad my HBCU taught me how to research before I write something that would bring shame upon my University and me.
So, HBCU's teach you to CYA (cover your [ass]esets) and do the research before writing something that makes the collective look foolish!
Goes to show you all academics are not created equal.

Whew!
For a minute, I was worried about the future of graduate education. But, minnesotan has helped me.
I will now teach my grad students at a non-HBCU that spelling counts more than substance, reasoning, or evidence.

If they haven't mastered spelling in their native language, I would not be optimistic about their ability to write substantive, well reasoned arguments. =)
