City has published today a very long list of vacancies for lecturers/readers in social sciences, all with a very nearing deadline (see at http://www.jobs.ac.uk) .

Does anyone have any insights about school politics (or, why there are so many vacancies all of a sudden)?

I will apply in any case, even if with such a short deadline, it seems rather suspicious to me.

I have no idea of the politics, but this does sometimes happen in the UK when a sum of money becomes available for recruitment for whatever reason. Having seen the list it does not seem unusually long - bear in mind that there tends to be much greater mobility in the UK, where there is a system of permanent contracts rather than tenure. For example, it is usually thought to be easier to get a promotion elsewhere than in your own department so people looking to move to Senior Lecturer positions may well have moved, leaving lecturer positions open.
