I know this is not a new thread topic...

It's killing me. I'm obsessively checking my work email anticipating the worst! My stomach drops out just thinking about it. All day long, I'm picturing different scenarios: they regret to inform me. . . they want me. . . moving there. . . . dealing with colleagues at my current job. . . staying here forever b/c no one else will ever want me. . . ugh! I don't think I can do this again next year if I don't get this one.

Similar boat here...you should distract yourself and not live in the future, I'm trying that. Reading the forums seems to help a little too don't you think?
It's hard not to say, my whole life depends on what happens this week or when I get the call...but it's out of your hands at this point so, easier said than done, relax.  Interesting...maybe I can follow some of my own words of advice now that I'm sharing with others...

Thanks for starting this thread. It's agonizing. My schools aren't even due to be calling until next week but I'm checking my email and voicemail obsessively... oh, and let's not forget the wiki!

I interviewed with a school that must have interviewed <5 candidates at AHA. They told me early Jan I'd hear "very soon". I'm guessing I didn't get a campus visit. But I'm wondering if anyone did! Bizarre. I'd rather just get a 'no thanks' email than be left hanging.

I am in the same boat.  In an MLA field.  I feel like all of the first round of offers have all gone out.  One of my colleagues, who knows about my job search, mentioned about how the last time she was on the market she didn't hear anything after a campus visit until one of those dreaded letters arrived in the mail some time in May--long after the new hire had signed the contract.  Ugh.

I think the worst part of the job search is after you've had a face-to-face interview or campus visit. Prior to that, you can always hope that the SC is delayed. Or you can always comfort yourself by saying, "Well, I'm better in person than on paper."

After you've met the SC personally, it's out there. You know that a decision is imminent. They've also not only read your CV, but they've met you. So, you are waiting to see whether you are their top candidate (or candidates).

As far as notification, at least for one of my campus visits, the SCC was courteous enough to send an email saying, "We're negotiating with someone else." It wasn't what I wanted to hear, but I knew that I could basically cross that school off the list.

Waiting here and it is just as you all describe---painful.  I have 4 apps out right now for TT jobs with research.  I am in Biology field.  One has never said anything and Wiki does not seem to help for Biology.  One position I answered questions posed by the SC and now I sit and wait.  Check email and cell phone all the time.  The two others seem to have no action and I am wondering about asking the status of their search...is it acceptable to ask about the search status or is that sounding to needy?

The general consensus on these fora seems to be don't pester them, unless it's to say 'I've got another offer, how long before you make up your mind?'

I won't pester anyone :) Unless a couple of weeks goes by after my campus visit.

Glad to know I'm not alone :) It does get easier to forget about it the more time passes. . . unfortunately, my job isn't even on the wiki, so no chance of updates there.

Can you add it to the wiki?

I heard through the grapevine that I was the only one to be interviewed, so I'm not posting. It would be obvious who posted (I'm not sure why I think that's a bad thing. . . ).

ah.
A job I interviewed for was listed on the wiki, but I thought it was possible (for reasons I won't go into here, as they could identify the institution) that I was the only person with a first round interview. Nonetheless I duly posted 'interviewed xx/xx' and lo and behold another person posted to say 'have you heard about campus visits?'. So I know: a. there is at least one other candidate, and b. I'm not the only one waiting. I'm happy to have this knowledge. Of course it doesn't rule out there being other candidate/s who had first-round interviews and have been asked for campus visits. Ah the many possibilities!!

Mine is an area that is pretty focused and would have a small pool for several reasons. . .

The waiting is killing me, too. I'm also in a somewhat small field; my dissertation advisor says 'the market is soft.' That makes me even more anxious......if it is so soft, why am I waiting for so long??!!! I did write the search chair, with a reply that really only confused me even more.....so......the waiting continues. I try to cope by: hitting the gym and group exercise classes as often as possible; talking to people in my life who have good, positive, and generally forward thinking energy; and by drinking martinis (either alone or with others......).

Good luck!!!

If I remember correctly, the SC at the place I visited last week was supposed to meet yesterday. Factor in the few days or more for the paperwork to go through administrative channels and you've got one nail-biting apablo. This is no fun.
