A university has posted two time-limited job offers, which seem to be identical in every aspect (type of specialization in the department, salary range, requirements, etc.), but the period - one is limited for five years, the other for three.

To which one should one apply if they are:
* recent graduate students looking for their first "real" job
* know that their chances are not very high: their dissertation and research "touch" that subject but are not so concentrated in it; the general chances for a fresh green PhD to find a job in this discipline are generally not huge, etc.
* it is 3 hours flight from where they are, which means relocating with a family; in an area which has another language (everybody in the family speaks that language, though)
* It is in a rather expensive city to live in, though one could expect that a lecturer's salary would be enough to nicely support a family there

It is not a dream job of mine, but I'm shooting in all directions and would certainly not be sad if I get it ;-) - still - should I apply for the five year contract or for the three year one? In which one do I have a better chance to get an interview, which will of course prove that I am the most wonderful/adequate person in the world?

Apologies for X/posting, because I am going to post it in a couple of other forums here.
