I've been teaching online for a number of years now and have found that most students don't read the syllabus. So what I do is post due dates in multiple places.

I do it in the announcement for that particular week. And I put it in the assignment folder so they see it there. And I post a reminder in a follow-up announcement. This way, they get it 3 times and cannot say they didn't know. Oh by the way, I make the date bolded and on a separate line so it stands out!

Yet despite all this, I will still get a couple of students who will ask me when something is due, or will miss it.
