One great writer of last century described these academics who rushed from this conference to another around the world international call girls. They pretend to go for serious discussion but real fact they want to enjoy themselves, free perk, stay in luxurious hotel, sightseeing. Their discussion are so shallow, useless they know this but to enjoy themselves, they rush to their destination, they are really international call girls.

I like it. Sexy, mysterious, exotic, desirable--that is me to a "T." I have a thrilling paper about Victorian era Indian photography that I would gladly give if some chivalrous gentleman would help with my "expenses."

What a brilliant first post!! You have a bright future here.
Lord do I wish I were a call girl - you make it sound so exciting! How boring to be a middle-aged academic, forever in cattle class.

WOW! You are indeed at a fancy institution if you're allowed to fly cattle class. I'm forced to travel with Ryan Air.

Was it Burkhardt who desribed conferences as where academics go to 'sniff each other like dogs'?

The article and the discussion all assume that the purpose of attending conferences is to hear or deliver papers.
Personally, I never attend sessions at conferences. The papers are usually available later and the delivery is often very poor and sleep-inducing and as other postings say, the papers are often not very good anyway.
By the time the last late person has finished coffee and disappeared into a session, the first bored people have started to come out. There are therefore always people in the corridors to meet and talk to.
Particularly for younger academics, one of the most valuable benefits of attending conferences is the opportunity to meet other younger academics in one's own area, sometimes leading to long term collaboration, not to mention friendship.
Video-conferencing definitely has its uses, but it cannot achieve that.

My husband called the "$1000.00 c.v. lines" during my late grad school first couple of years tt. Even when someone would "reimburse" expenses it most often fell very short and we scrambled for the gap financing. But, getting those c.v. lines for major disciplinary conferences definitely helped me secure a job---by the end of my VAP year after the degree, I could say I'd presented at every major and sub-field important conference in my field. And, I have the credit card bills to prove it!
I *wish* conferences were that exotic, sexy and exciting...well, not really, I'm not that wild. I'd like to think the exciting potential was there for conferences but mainly they are too crowded or too full of insular people, too expensive and from my current location they are all too much of a pain to get to---oh, yeah, I'm not fond of air travel either so that puts the damper on my enthusiasm as well.

The article on flying academics, and the OP's reference really seem entirely out of touch. Yes, I fly too much, and try to keep it down. but:
1) the assumption that conferences are meant for transmitting information written in papers is kust wrong. Conferences are for meeting people, and talking about unfinished work, vague ideas, and for planning future cooperation. Video-link conferences do not come out of the blue - an initial contact needs to be established first. Big name will not spend half a day in a videoconference with unknown name, unless they have had a chance to schmooze together, or at least meet to assess the reliability and character of the other.
2) conferences in exotic places: they are often too far to fly to for me so a waste of time, and conferences in exotic locations sometimes suffer from low quality and little discipline (people leaving halfway etc). So they're not always worth going to. I've had many great opportunities to go to fabulous locations, but the exoticness of the conference locations is generally not a factor.
3) luxury hotels????
4) Conferences cost money. Even with all expenses paid, I always tend to spend more money than by just staying at home
5) time: conferences take so much time that I often regret having gone soemwhere when I see the pile of work waiting for me when coming back home

Ooo, getting ready to go to conferences in the exotic locations of Osage Beach, Missouri and Peoria, Illinois. Ok, Osage Beach is a resort, but it is now the frozen off-season.
Conferences are for networking, as well as presenting clinics/papers. And you couldn't browse the exhibit halls and touch and hear the products via video conferencing.
Oh, and on an international research trip, I was propositioned on a local tram. I wonder what I was supposed to do for the 70 Euros offered. I couldn't figure out how to respond in the local language, so I hopped off at the next stop and took the subway.
Does that make me an international call girl?
