The extent, representation, quality, deliverability, reviews etc. all speak for themselves.

This point, I think, we can all agree upon.

Don't you miss this thread?  You do!  Come on, admit it.

I thought I would resurrect it to note that VDM's operations have attracted the attention of Writer Beware, the watchdog arm of the Science Fiction & Fantasy Writers of America (SFWA).  (Lest you scoff, the SF/F community--and SFWA in particular--ranks among the most reliable, and aggressive, constituencies in the publishing world, especially where sniffing out fraud is concerned.)

http://accrispin.blogspot.com/2009/09/victoria-strauss-vdm-verlag-dr-mueller.html

Strauss's post may be especially useful for those who are unfamiliar with contractual language or industry standards:  she quickly and deftly explains which elements of a VDM contract place the press in the vanity publishing category.

Wow!  I've never seen such an uproar over something kinda silly . . . 34 pages of posts!

I published my doctoral dissertation with VDM last year, and was happy with the result; it looks good and they were easy to work with.  I list it as a monograph on my CV, and don't make a big deal out of it -- since it's not. It looks nice sitting on my shelf, and it's been helpful to be able to refer to my dissertation as a book when I write articles and such.  As long as you don't misrepresent it, or expect to make money -- what's the big deal?  I do think VDM's books are overpriced -- though I have had colleagues publish similarly through a "regular" publisher -- and their academic works are high priced, too, and many of them also grew out of their dissertation research.

Nah, nobody's bored enough to pick up that pallid bait when there are much more fun trolls to play with.

Correction:  Apparently, one person is bored enough.

Fine.  Two people are bored enough.

Dr_Zack, you have basically missed the whole point of the thread.

Getting a prettily printed copy of your dissertation is fine.

Calling a dissertation a monograph is not.

"publishing with VDM" means that you are passing off the dissertation, the same big stack o' writin' that everyone has to do to earn a Ph.D., as a book.  While many people eventually turn the research they have done for the dissertation into a big, expensive book, the fact that you have failed to grasp the difference between a scholarly book and a dissertation does not bode well for your future.

I said that so much more succintly. ;-)

A dissertation DOES NOT EQUAL a monograph. Therefore, Dr. Zack is misrepresenting (despite his illogic to the contrary).

Even when you change the font and make a nice cover picture ?

Don't confuse a dissertation using a nice font and cover picture with a monograph.

Of course, my dissertation is in Courier, I think. That just proves I'm old.

Like this?

Dr. Zack . . . page 34
Graupel . . . page 1

Now this thread is monograph-y...

Yep, it is indeed.  Have you already put it on your CV and credited me with co-authorship for the idea?

Of course, I did that before I posted here and I uploaded the new CV version to Intrafolio. I listed you as first author, of course.

Very good.  Now did you put that accomplishment in your newest cover letter and are you prepared to discuss it with the tenure committee?
