I agree with lordofchill. I'm publishing the diss as papers anyway, so I may consider VDM simply so that I can give a shiny copy of my diss to my grandma for christmas. She'll be so proud...

I really do think having a book will definitely look good on my CV. To posses a your own book is priceless. I don't see the problem in publishing it in a book form rather than is some journals. I can publish 80% of my work that is awesome. My friends and relatives are very happy and I am proud. Some of you guys have so much lack of maturity to post anything that came to your minds without knowing what it really is. Infopri now I know why you have so much posted comments.
Like runwithscissors said my grandma will be proud of me. :)

But the reality is, it's only a book in material form. Anybody who knows VDM is not going to think it looks good on your CV or consider it a book in the traditional academic sense. I would not hire somebody who had published their "book" with VDM and called it a book on their CV. |

I think the only sensible way to put it on your cv would be to specifically label it as a dissertation/thesis published with VDM.... then employers would know its not a legitimate book contract in the 'traditional' sense.

I published a monograph with VDM Verlag. My PhD advisor recommended doing so. I work in the social sciences, and many of my peers recommended accepting teh invitation to publish with them. I am very satisfied with the quality of the publication and their peer review process.

When I submitted the required copies of my dissertation to the university for binding, I turned over another four or five copies to the biology librarian to be bound for a nominal price (maybe $15 each). One went to my advisor, one to my parents, one to work, one stayed home... I can't remember if I sent one to Grandma or not.
It was a lot easier than signing up with some German vanity press and I suspect that most university libraries would do the same if you asked the right person. I had to wait a couple of months until the next batch of journals went out for binding and came back to the library.

Ask VDM. It would be up to them. The consensus here seems to be that they are essentially acting as a printer, rather than a publisher. |

VDM is a great place to send your thesis/dissertation and get a book out of it. Don't put it on your CV because then someone will ask and you will say, well, it's really my dissertation. Just don't put it on there, or if you do, just put it under your dissertation title.

As for being peer-reviewed, they look for topics and email you and take what you give them as is. I was not asked to change a single thing. So the review process is practically non-existent.
