The origin and extent of your confusion has now been clarified.

But what's the scam here? How are they making money from "publishing" a million books that nobody will read?

Nobody is calling it a scam. We're just saying it's not an academically credible publication.
They make money because they print on demand. I accidentally bought one of their "books" from Amazon. It was full of spelling/grammatical errors, and the thing was a thin paperback (MAX 50 pages) and cost me $75. It probably cost them a $1 to print. That's how they make money.

Yes, precisely.  It is not a scam, in the sense that VDM does indeed provide the services it advertises.  But it is in effect a vanity publisher, and it is highly unlikely, in the USA at least, to enhance your academic reputation.

I carefully read through the comments and google out some facts.
At least, someone (assistant professor in US, even more around the world) did post a VDM publication in a CV on line as http://www.cs.wayne.edu/~hzhang/CV.pdf

The final judgment to publish through VDM is up to your purpose, your filed and your institution.

So many facts, it is almost overwhelming.

So he sent his "book" with the nice binding to his mother in China... How is this any proof that a VDM is of any scholarly value?

NO. This is exactly the issue that has been raised here. There has been no evidence or argument that for any purpose (scholarly, academic,  or professional advancement) or, for any field or area from any self-respecting institution (on-line and diploma mills excluded) a publication with VDM has any value.

You may not realize it but the responses posted by VDM staff on this forum have resulted in an even worse image for VDM than what was originally perceived.

Really, this is the time to stop feeding this fire, it is burning your butt.

I would like to thank the people on this thread for sharing their experiences. Having read through the whole thing I feel I've been able to get a good idea of VDM and what it means to publish with them. Thanks again!

I got one of these invitations this morning, and have been sleuthing about it for about an hour. Apparently VDM has 1,321 offerings on Amazon.   I am tempted to check it out, and can still submit journal articles.  The company looks legit, if not first class...but a lot of companies start out that way and make themselves into something...I want to watch and see.  Please keep sending information.

Hi All

Needless to say, I am joining in because I also got the invitation from VDM. I do agree that it will not add that many academic credentials to your CV. But here is the deal: I have extracted all the possible publications from my PhD thesis (I defended 5 years ago) and currently, so I joke to the PhD students in my laboratory, my thesis mostly functions as an excellent dustcollector. This is why I feel like I have really not that much to lose with the VDM endeavour. I do understand the scepticism boosted in this forum but at the same time it could mean somewhat of a second life for my thesis.

To be continued....

Or you could just go to Kinko's and get them to print out a copy and put a nice cover on it.
But of course, you wouldn't advise that, since you're a shill for VDM.
