I am interested in a faculty position at the UAE University, and was wondering if any one has information about the working conditions in this university in general, and the available research resources in the applied sciences in particular. Any feedback or comment is highly appreciated. Thank you.

Not that this directly helps, but I remember last year, I came across someone's webpage where they gave an account of their year working at UAEU.  Very interesting; the person had taught math there.  I'm not sure whether the page is still online, though.

I wish I could be more specific.  I applied for a job there in 2006 and while I was researching it came across this guy's webpage.  I have no idea if it's still up, though.  Good luck.

UAEU is a government university aimed at local students i.e. UAE citizens.

The university is located in Al Ain, which is an oasis town with a couple of modest shopping malls, a handful of hotels, and a few tourist sights. It is roughly two hours drive thru the desert to the bright lights of Dubai in one direction and about the same distance from Abu Dhabi in another direction.  Al Ain is right next to the border with Oman.

I worked at the UAE University in Al Ain, in the EFL unit. I posted a couple of responses in other forums on this site if you want to look. I had a positive experience overall, and the students were kind and respectful--the women more than the men--but they didn't study very hard in our general requirements unit. Students in major programs would, hopefully, be more motivated. The university seemed overy bureaucratic and dysfunctional. We faculty often survived on the grapevine to get actual information. The work was not difficult, and the holidays and package were good. The cost of living has certainly shot up since we left. The best parts were the friends and colleagues from many countries, the mild winter climate, and the 2 month holidays in the summer (125 F is too hot to stay there). It's best to stay for several years so that you can break even or get ahead financially.

I too taught at UAEU in Al Ain for a few years. I left a few years back and have heard from friends who are still working there that cost of living has really shot up, that housing is really hard to come by (people were housed in hotels for months upon arrival this past fall), and that traffic has started to be an issue in Al Ain which used to be a pretty easy place to get around in.

While the mild winters and easy going lifestyle were great perks - not to mention the money and vacation time (60+ days a year) - teaching Emirati students can be anything but rewarding as they are not motivated for the most part.

I had experience teaching both at the general requirements unit and in the faculty of arts and sciences. Students enrolled in the Faculties were a little better than the UGRU ones, but nothing spectacular.

Teaching there was a very interesting experience for me and, back then, I really enjoyed the expat lifestyle that working in the UAE afforded me. All in all it wass a great time in my life.
