What do other dissertators listen to when working? Here's what's been accompanying me lately:

Artists in my iTunes right now under "Recently Played":
Catherine Feeny
Phosphorescent
Rogue Wave
Regina Spektor
Sara Bareilles
Rosie Thomas
Charlotte Martin
The Age of Rockets

This just makes me feel old, abdgangsta. I've never heard of ANY of these.

Not even Regina Spektor? She was one of VH1's "You Oughta Know" artists a few months ago.

I also have eccentric and weird taste in music. But this topic isn't about judgment - I'm curious to know what others listen to!

I do not listen to music while working, but I have what I would call my dissertation soundtrack. These are songs that I listen to when I take a break and go for a run or a walk. They have different meanings, some silly and some not so much. A few are:

"Nothin' Better to Do" by Leann Rimes (I heard this while waiting for my proposal to be approved!)
"Stand" by Rascal Flatts
"My Sacrifice" by Creed
"Eye of the Tiger" (no explanation needed)
"I'm Just a Girl" by No Doubt

I love this one. Why didn't I think of that? What a great motivational/I'm-a-badass song!

I think I've been stuck on the equivalent of comfort food lately. Sonic Youth, Neko Case, Gits, and X are all making repeated appearances these days.  Maybe I need to find some new stuff to dissertate by, stimulate new ideas and all that.

I'm also in a comfort groove--and Neko Case is definitely part of it. Along with Vienna Teng, the Decemberists, Belle & Sebastian, Silverchair, Gomez, Travis, Beck... and Saint-Saens, Dvorak, Shostakovich.

I like to mix it up while working.

I love Vienna Teng - and Sonic Youth. These are going into my newest playlist.

I'm not quite dissertatin', but . . .

. . . I wrote my M. A. thesis to Sublime "Stand by Your Van."

I have a feeling that I'll be writing a lot of my dissertation to Jack Johnson and G. Love.

And, of course, a lot of NPR.

Joanna Newsom, all the way. Except when I get distracted by how amazing the lyrics are. She's the only musician I know who writes lyrics about semiotic theory.

Others:

Moxy Fruvous ("King of Spain" is my favourite silly song)
Kate Bush
Jose Gonzales
Zero Seven - those of you in a "comfort" groove should check them out
Rilo Kiley
The Decemberists (good call epistephiliac!)
Iron and Wine

I can't listen to music while dissertating - I get too distracted by the lyrics. I need quiet. Oh, how boring I've become. In my youth, I listened to music every waking moment, even while reading Foucault or writing an essay on existentialism ... wait, maybe that's how I got through it!

Cannonball (The Breeders)
Bootylicious (I know, this belongs on the Shouldn't Like thread)
Residential Love Song (KC Accidental)
Yes We Can Can (Pointer Sisters)
Journey to Anywhere (Ugly Duckling)
I Feel It All (Feist)

Oh, I haven't played Iron and Wine in ages.  I think today needs to include some of them, and then some of Calexico.  And then maybe some Califone, just because I like to say Calexico and Califone together.

I'm liking this collaborative dissertating soundtrack--thanks for starting it Abdgangsta.  Oh, and Nanoo just reminded me of the Breeders, more comfort.

I heart the new Iron and Wine album - it definitely ranks in my top ten of 2007. alwaysanon - we have extremely similar tastes in music. If I didn't know that I don't happen to have another moniker, I would say that you are me. :)
