(See, the colon & don't even convert into a yellow smiley on CHE. How awesome is that?)

One thing I notice, Geogeek, is that you mention having six months here while the number under your name is 50 posts.
I have been here less than six months and, well, let's just say everyone who isn't blind knows my opinions on all kinds of topics. I can state for a fact that several people wish I would just shut up, but other people have been very welcoming.
The point is we have hardly gotten a chance to know you. No, the clubhouse isn't full. Please, stay and post more frequently and become a personality. Yes, you will need a thick skin, but we have room for all kinds. If Kaysixteen, RandyStephens, and whatever the chameleon is calling himself today can coexist here with Tolerantly, Onion, and Grasshopper, surely you can find a group of regular posters with whom you click.

This is one of my favorite posts on the topic. Of course, one could also go back to the all female forum topic for a good laugh ( http://chronicle.com/forums/index.php/topic,31941.0.html). It was started by abu before he became the daves and danny’s of the forum. All righty everyone, let's be sure we have no cliques. Since I am being so bossy lately, I hereby declare the following rules to be in effect as of noon today EST:
1. No poster may post more than the poster with the lowest number of posts. All posters are equal and we can't have any posters being more equal than others. Sorry, anthroid. So close and yet so far.
2. Any posters whose time logged in exceeds 24 hours must cease and desist posting immediately. Additionally, since cliques require a minimum of three people, no more than 2 users may be signed on at the same time.
3. If you find out you have something in common with another poster, like an alma mater, favorite TV show, favorite drink, similar job situation, or comparable outlook on life, you must stop conversing with that person IMMEDIATELY. We can't have any personal friendships springing up, I'll have you know. If anyone looks like they're loitering on the fora, the Forum Police will be along to poke you with their bully sticks and tell you to move along, buster.
4. Posters may absolutely not wear the same sweater as Jennifer on the first day of school.
5. In order to prevent establishing an online identity, please register for each post separately, and use a moniker that has "anon" in it. That will prevent us from knowing whether your advice is reliable or not based on previous advice you may or may not have given in the past.
6. Do not say anything funny or clever. You may inadvertently cause others to like you.
7. If any inside jokes are detected, posters will immediately be smacked with a large mackerel.
8. You are required to like everybody. No advice is better or worse than other advice. Everyone is equally qualified to get any job they want. No questions are stupid. Searching the fora, using search engines, and doing any kind of independent research are unnecessary impositions. Any intimation to the contrary will be punished by more mackerel smacking. Remember, the job of everyone here is to bend over backwards for others at all times. Some of you are not very bendy.
9. Every post must come with a smiley-face or lollipop at the end.
10. No disagreement is allowed. When one poster is told hu is in the wrong, it is clearly the work of a vast left-wing clique. (See point 8 above.) I agree with everything! Creationism and evolutionism are both right! Alphabet Soup people both will and will not burn in h*ll, and I both will and will not rejoice in righteousness! Cover letters both should and shouldn't be printed on fancy paper, and they should be both stapled AND paper-clipped!
Yay for everyone!
Best wishes! :-)

I will second Polly, that posting more often is the only way that people get to know you. I sometimes feel odd, in that my post count is far less than others who have been registered a short time. It does sometimes inhibit my posting, because I "get" many of the in-jokes, but am afraid that if I respond in kind that not everyone will take it in the way I intend.
On a side note, either Polly is both an incredibly fast reader and typer, or ... - Polly, how do find the time for so many posts? I have imagined you there, chained up in the asylum, with only the constant internet access and your rich fanatasy life for companionship.. :)

My start on here was a bit rough, but I survived it, and look where I am now!
Hmm. Maybe that isn't such a good idea.
Thing is, the older forumites tend to just snark back when they get snarked. Nobody takes it seriously. And when someone starts a thread that punches buttons, it may be best to just step back and watch the carnage. I've learned to stay away from topics that hit my emotions (well, mostly).

It's just a matter of discipline and priorities. You can do it, Scienceprof! Oops, must run. It's time for the weekly exercise period and I do so love that hour of sunshine.

I'm not so sure that there's a clubhouse, per se, but there are people whose prominent voices and running jokes seem to appear everywhere.
Well, there was a Sweatlodge, before some newbie issued a cease-and-desist order because hu claimed we had mortally offended hus culture by adopting the S-word. Maybe the Lodge-That-Shall-Not-Be-Named would have gone quietly into that good night anyway, but the whole episode left me even more wary of newbies who want to play the spoil-sport by stirring up controversy from the get-go. Not that you are one of them, Geogeek. I'm just sayin'. Francie, vying with VP for Most Curmudgeonly Forumite of 2008 and top contender for Best Hyphenation by a Forumite Award.

I've found the older posters often snark whether you've snarked or not. Most younger posters (at least myself) never heard of snarking prior to this website.

You haven't read Pinkwater's The Snarkout Boys and the Avocado of Death? True, snarking here is not the same as the official snarkouting in the book, but the subtext is quite obvious.

Personally I think this "new" poster is Abufletcher a.k.a Dave a.k.a etcetera who is once again complaining about the clique that's not a clique. If there ever had been a clique that didn't exist, those posters who did (or didn't) belong to it have become as irrelevant in the new forum as "The Whole in the Wall Gang." I can't think of a single one of those old-timer "gang member" who I would still see as a central participant in the forum today, based on a casual review of the names on recent posts. Including any of the Dave incarnations.

There are some that are mostly snark. But if you read closely, it is possible to tell that some of those don't really mean to be, well, mean. Take for instance, LarryC. He is the master of one-liners. A lot of us live for them. Dr. Stones is another. I'm always watching for his golf games. And as some others have noted, people like to snark here in a way they can't in real life. Since this ISN'T real life, why take it seriously? I came to the conclusion that it isn't worth it to get involved with anything that will get you upset. I've done that a few times and realized no matter how I may feel and how much I know about a topic, you can't change the minds of some of the others on here. At those moments, it is just best to agree to disagree. Get a thick skin, and snark back! :)

Thank you, RealFrancie. May I have another hyphen with my julep?

Wow, I'm jealous. I've never been booted off for being offensive. Perhaps you just need to turn it down a notch or two. High snarking is about two levels below flaming to a crisp.

I regretted starting this thread immediately after pressing the "post" button, but after reading all of your responses that feeling's gone now. Thanks for the frank discussion! I have a new appreciation for the forum and all you forumites. I'll try to lurk less and not be quite so gun-shy about posting.
