Dear Forumites,

I find myself in a social sticky wicket and I’m hoping you can help me.

While a few fellow students and I were on a research trip over the summer, the professor we were working with at Different University and his wife very generously invited us to stay at their house.  During holiday cleaning they came across a book I accidentally left there and shipped it to me.  It seems a thank you/ general “happy holidays” note is in order.  When we were there, we called the professor who was overseeing the research Professor X and he never corrected us while his wife introduced herself by her first name and insisted that we use it.  I’m pretty sure she has a PhD though she doesn’t work in academia and because I never called her by her last name, I don’t know if it’s the same as her husband’s or not.

How on earth do I address the envelope without stepping on toes?  And, for the greeting, would it be "Dear Professor X and Firstname" since that is what she requested?  Maybe I'm making too big of a deal of this but names and titles are sensitive subjects and I have no idea what to do with this one.  Any ideas you have would be most appreciated!

Just address it to Drs. Hubby and Wife XXXXX.

I doubt they would be offended if she had a different last name. You didn't know and it's a forgivable offense.
