I'm sure this has been asked and answered before, but I can't seem to find the information. Sorry for any duplication. I've been told that interview timelines are much shorter in the UK than in the US. How long does it typically take universities to draft an interview shortlist after the application deadline (assuming it's not some sort of cross-listed position)? How long after that to get to the actual interview? I realize this is probably very situation-specific, but if it's at all possible to generalize, I'd be grateful for a broad picture.

Not long... very fast.... offers made generally the same day... acceptance expected quickly... little negotiation re: salary... can negotiate placement on the salary scale.

It took 3 months for my current post to short-list, so the rapid timeframe for short-listing is not always adhered to. For another post I learned on a Monday that I was required for interview on a Friday.

Thanks for the quick replies! This is very helpful. So it seems that things indeed tend to move a lot faster than in the US. Except when they don't. :)

I once got asked to an interview with only two-day's notice. They didn't give me the time of the interview until the day before. It was 8.30 am!

I think I've interviewed with several near relatives of that committee over the years. My favourite was having to get from Newcastle upon Tyne to Coleraine on 48 hours notice. I've always harboured a sneaking suspicion that somebody in the HR department at Ulster just saw Newcastle and thought "oh, local candidate! Newcastle's just down the road, they won't need any notice".

So a half week notice (or less) for interviews is common practice? The mind boggles.

It's only mind boggling when you're out of the country.

But we interview by phone and 95% of our ads include the interview date
