I enjoyed this column, but wondered a little if it isn't indicative of a larger issue in higher education relating to what we tell graduate students about the job search and why.  The full article is on my site, http://www.rewrittenreality.com; feedback there or here would be welcome.

Uh--no.  I enjoyed the article on THE CHRONICLE.  I wrote about what I thought about it on my site.  Thanks for the uncalled for attack, though.

realwriter, if I understand correctly, the column you enjoyed is the column with the title "The Job marked Horror Story" here at the CHE, while the article on which you want feedback is your post at your blog.

This is very badly communicated in your original post on this thread, which I would normally have read as expatinuk did, that you had enjoyed a column at your own site. - DvF

I don't really get the column (didn't read the "article," sorry). The horror story is that an interviewer mistakenly thought the author's appointment was scheduled for the next day--but she managed to catch up with him in time to hold her interview, anyway. Is that right?

Eh. Based on stories I've read here, I was expecting a lot worse.

I also don't quite understand the link she makes between what happened to her, and "online advice" (I assume she's referring to these fora?). And what does the fact that the candidates are all dressed conservatively have to do with it? The pacing on this story is all wrong: too much build-up for too little payoff.

I don't know.  A failure in clarity is usually grounds for snarkasm around here.

A particularly thorny problem for a writer....

As far as the desired feedback goes, I would also add that the ideas expressed in the blog are by no means new. Heck, we've been talking about that stuff here for years.

I think he plagiarized the forum. And without attribution.

Friday morning flashmob, anyone?  I'm on the left coast today and woke up way too early . . .

The column in the CHE wasn't good, and the re-hashing of it on Real Writer's blog wasn't any better.

YAWN.

So it is a piss-poor plagiarism as well?

Me too - in fact I think I was kind of hoping for something worse! It would have been more interesting.

I hardly see how the original post was difficult to understand.  The title of this thread is "The Job Market Horror Story."  As with many of the other threads in the "Discuss Chronicle Articles" section (which would seem to be self-explanatory on its face), that refers to the column or article we're discussing.  I apologize for not linking to that article in my original post.  MY blog post, discussing (and with some criticisms for) that article, is on my website, with links and full attribution to the original article at The Chronicle, as you could see within two seconds of clicking the link I put here.  I did not bother to put the full text of my response here, as I thought it would be more polite to give you the option to click over to the site or not as you chose.  There is obviously no plagiarism involved in any case.

One parting thought: if these sorts of comments ("a failure in clarity," "piss-poor plagiarism") are representative of the typical reaction to someone who was simply interested in generating a discussion about an article in The Chronicle (you know, in the DISCUSS CHRONICLE ARTICLES forum), then count me out.  What a nasty group, if so.

Apologies for the clearly unwanted contribution.

And my nickname. Real Writer, is based on the site title, Rewritten Reality, not some attempt to prove my greater worth.  Never mind, I'm gone.  Moderators, please lock and delete this thread; my apologies for crashing the party here.  I had no idea new contributors and posters were this unwanted.

I looked at your site. I'm afraid I don't understand the picture that you open with and describe as indicative of the problems in the job hunt / the CHE article. It's a bunch of random people walking in a hallway...
