I have about 200 pages written (intro, three chapters of lit review, methods) and going through a second round of review by my advisor. Meanwhile, I need to be done with the bulk of my data analysis by mid-January, so I have daily goals for that. No days off over break.

Today I am mostly doing OCR of documents, which is mind-numbingly dull. Yikes.

I love scanning and OCRing documents! Well, not doing it, but having it done.

Great! I have 3000 pages that I need done by the end of the week. Where do I send them?

I'm trying to pull a lot of notes together into something more chapter-like, and would like to get this done by the end of the month.  I sent a draft of a separate chapter to my writing partner yesterday and spent the rest of the day grading.  Now I have a few last papers to grade that are making me sort of yearn towards the dissertation, scary as that is.  I'd probably get more done if I could resist baking and then staying up late to watch Buffy episodes and 28 weeks later (though admittedly I was tense enough after that movie to stay up and get some more work done).

I will be working hard over the 'break'.  After all, those of my former colleagues who have gone into the NHS will only get a break Christmas and Boxing Day (if they're lucky), so why should I be different?  On a serious note, it's also necessary.

I will be working over the break! I can't afford not to. I would not be able to fall asleep at night if I didn't. I am jealous of those of you who can. I took 2 days off this month - days when I should've been working and I am still trying to sort out the guilt over that. (I DO realize that this borders on obsessive, making my life productive and miserable at the same time). If anyone can suggest ways to change my personality...

martina,
I understand your obsessive/compulsive behavior completely! Even if I only write for a for a few hours in the morning, I have to do something or I am stressed out all day!

I have not been feeling well and today I have not worked on my dissertation yet and I am getting anxious! Yikes. Sorry, I am not the person to help you out! Good luck!

Day two of break. I have downloaded about 50 articles for the lit. review, and entered them into End Note. I plan to read most of them over the break. I am waiting for some Christmas $$ to go buy a couple books I need.

I'm just glad I've got my topic.

So, now I am realizing that I only have a week left of break and I am freaking out! I have been writing for about half of the day and then I cannot do it anymore but I am writing EVERY SINGLE DAY! I wrote three pages yesterday. Yuck . . . I am so sick of this thing! I figure that if I am consistent then I will still get it all done.

Hear, hear.

I made some good headway in this chapter today, actually, and finished two tough sections. I still have plenty to do, though. I'm actually on a pretty good trajectory that should see me finish on schedule, but that's if I continue working the way I have been, and I am just so ready to be done. Argh.

On the other hand, I have two great campus interviews lined up and a "please send us a formal proposal" from a good publisher, so things are going well. I'm just so sick of the plodding slog and I am ready for some retail therapy!

How's everyone else doing in this post-Christmas lull?

I suppose that the word "break" was improperly used in my OP. I want to defend in March and like some of you, I am freaking out. A lot of my freaking out is not due to my own actual work but rather, the revisions and all of the technical formatting and getting everyone else on board and scheduled at the same time stresses me out tons! Getting signatures is always a pain!

Coffee and Red Bull are my best friends right now. Anyone use any other type of methods to keep going?

If you can do the actual formatting of a dissertation (punctuation, font, spacing), get 4-5 busy professors to meet together on the same day at the same time, come up with $$$ for grad fees & tuition, prepare an interesting defense presentation complete with genuine smile and knowledge that you gathered, you will earn your PhD.

A great piece of advice from one of my former PhD committee members: if you can get in, you can get out....
