I'm confused: there are two new wikis? Nailman's one at scratchpad and fuzzy lurker's? If so, where is the second one? The old one seems to be just the same as it always was, for better or for worse.

Is there any way to get rid of that really annoying band of advertising across the page in the Scratchpad Wikia? It gets in the way.

To clarify:
There's one new wiki, at scratchpad, courtesy of Nailman.
But getting the layout and navigation up and running isn't a one-person job (especially if that one person should happen to be an end-of-term academic who's on the job market). So I've been pitching in, as have others.
Althea: That box you're seeing in the middle of the page is: a) not advertising, and b) not supposed to be there. I'm going to take a wild guess and say that you're using Internet Explorer. The Scratchpad wiki site is laid out using CSS positioning; IE still has occasional brainfarts when it comes to positioning CSS layouts correctly. You can use any standards-compliant browser (Firefox & Opera are the most common) to completely eliminate that problem when using the wiki.

I have copied the band of whatever it is on the Wikia page.
I do have IE, and I can't change just for Wikia. I work from a rather old, rather temperamental computer and I'm not very computer savvy. I guess I'll have to live with it. I can't see a good deal of the Wikia page as the band cuts across the entries.
Thanks anyway

Or is she seeing a pop up?
Several people using IE (version 6 or before) have reported the same behavior. It's not a popup. It's actually the footer for the Scratchpad wiki site, but improperly rendered out of position by the browser. I could walk people through adding a snippet of CSS to eliminate the problem, but by the time they have a browser advanced enough to allow local modification of the stylesheet, the positioning problem is already solved. (For those interested, in the stylesheet "main.css", modify #footer to include the following line: "display: none;") Althea: If you were able to update to IE7, it would solve the problem (I just checked). What version of Windows are you using?

Thanks for the help. I do appreciate it but.....
I have IE Version 6, and Windows XP. I make my living on this computer and have deadlines for projects. I have already had trouble with compatibility with programs and my IP after I had to change from Windows 98 and the earlier verion of Explorer. I'm not willing to risk screwing things up for the wiki even temporarily.
I do think that the information on the old wiki should have been left up and "the people" could have chosen.

Win98 and IE 5 and earlier do have rampant compatibility problems. If you've updated to XP, changing from IE6 to 7 is trivial (and reversible, if necessary). I recommend it highly - IE7 is more secure and stable.

I am having no problems now with IE6. I only changed from Windows 98 and the earlier IE because I got a new (used) computer with XP. I had a lot of problems getting things straightened out, and now that my system is relatively stable, it's staying the way it is.
The only problem I have with IE6 is wikia. There comes a time when something gets to be too much trouble, and the new wikia is at that point.

"The people" are still free to choose to use the old wiki if they want to keep restoring it over and over again after it's vandalized. Or you can suggest a third option -- there are probably other sites other than the Wikia scratchpad one that provide free wiki hosting that's harder to vandalize. That's just the first one I came up with that seemed decent. Presumably in the long run whatever's best will win.

The last time I looked at the cached version of the original wiki, the links to the disciplines I am interested in had been broken completely and the information transferred to the Wikia scratchpad. When I typed the discipline name into the search box of the original wiki all the info was gone. The links to disciplines that had not been transferred to wikia scratchpad still worked, and the information was still reachable.
It looked like a unilateral decision had been made to move the information and not leave people a choice. If this is not the case and it was the work of the saboteur, I apologize.
Although the links of the cached wiki are still gone, the information can again be reached by typing the discipline name into the search box. Whoever replaced it thank you.

Yes, it was the work of a saboteur. That's why I set up the new site. Regarding the information still being there, that is only true for some disciplines. Others (like mine) the individual pages containing the information were deleted as well.

People are updating the old wiki even though the page in question has already been copied to the new wiki. In consequence, the new wiki is already out of date for my field. Unless the data in the old wiki is removed, and replaced with links to the corresponding pages in the new wiki, this will continue to happen. Otherwise, we'll be left with two wikis to check - and we were already checking the one far too often as it was.
