How would an American go about seeking an academic post in the U.K.?  I'm probably more interested in a visiting professorship type of thing than anything TT, though of course I wouldn't dismiss the latter out of hand.  Is there a British equivalent of the MLA Job Information List over there?  (My field is creative writing.)  Does their "season" work differently than ours?  Are their serious barriers to Americans getting hired in the U.K. (like there are in Canada)?  Anything else I should know?

  Anything else I should know?

Well.... not to be totally snarky... you need to know how to do some research. All the questions you've asked are asked ALL the time here... look down through the threads and read the answers.

But I guess that wouldn't be 'creative'.

Gee, expat, nice to know you refrained from being totally snarky.  You certainly sound patient and good-natured enough to be a fine educator.  I can't imagine why your genius wasn't appreciated in the U.S.

It seems that the question of finding jobs, accommodation in the UK come up regularly.

Perhaps it would be useful to start an FAQ thread addressing these questions so that posters could be directed there?

I liked one of the responses in a previous thread on this topic - first step is, learn how to do research.  Ouch.

It`s just common sense on a forum like this to spend a few minutes working out what people have already written here.  Why should those of us who have been here for a while write the same responses over and over just because someone new shows up with the clever idea of moving to Britain?

Maybe it didn't occur to qrypt, a person (?) of clearly superior intellect, that the OP was a newbie to the boards and perhaps didn't know any better, or maybe wasn't sure how to do a search.  I'm sure hu will now leave us with a fine impression of the community.

In the amount of time it took you to compose and post your snarky remark, you could have posted something helpful, instead.  Or would that just have ruined your whole day?  Maybe it's time for you stop killing kittens, emerge from your dank hovel, and let some sunlight wash over you.  If that doesn't work, try ECT.

And maybe it's time for the juniors to take on board a bit of the advice that they pretend to seek - rather than want to be spoon fed everything like the feckless undergraduates who are so complained about elsewhere on these boards.

There is nothing "snarky" about the replies.  It is actually disturbing too see so much laziness around, especially from people seeking employment from others.  Simply going to Google and typing "academic jobs UK" would do you a lot of good; is that too much to expect?

It's fascinating to see how much effort some people are willing to make in order to defend (and perpetuate) mean-spiritedness, when, with significantly less effort, you could just be helpful.  Oh, but then the newbies wouldn't "learn" anything.  You all must be wonderful in the classroom.  I certainly hope I don't work with any of you.

Based on some of these posts, I'm starting to formulate a theorem that leaving the U.S. to work overseas makes people nasty.  The evidence certainly seems to be piling up.  Maybe science expat could weigh in on that one.

I thought one formulated a hypothesis.

Ah.... the posting name is different... but I recognize that 'I hate Americans' attitude.

I've lost count of the names you've used here.... and I'm not going to say 'Welcome' because I'm sure that you'll end up getting banned.... again...
