Anyone read the Hefce consultation on the successor to the RAE yet?

We're now moving towards REF - "Research Excellence Framework".

It's a brave new world...

You science types are toast.  To be excellent, you'll have to have a citation rate three times the average rate.  No more Garrison Keillor for you lot ("all the children are above average") - Denham has you sorted because he apparently knows some basic arithmetic.

The rest of us might still be able to spin our way into excellence.  But you can't hold it against us, after all we don't understand that numerical crap.

'Light touch peer review' in the humanities- just shortland for re-enforcing the status quo.

And metrics in the sciences will be any different?

The consultation document has a big big focus on bibliometrics and how they will be determined but there's absolutely no detail on the relative weighting with respect to research students and external grant income. And no info about how important "prestigious" funding, e.g. research council, will be with respect to "other" income".

By memory, a recent article in Research Fortnight claims that something like 20 UK institutions get a huge proportion of RC funding. If this is correct, would anyone like to bet on the weighting of RC income in the forthcoming "REF"?

You're right. The same departments/ universities will still come top. And I expect that there will be the same amount of work involved in terms of 'making sure' that the department/ university does well in the REF.

I do too - but only from afar.  Once they start trying to put me on committees dedicated to preparation for it, I'll scream bloody murder.  But mostly I've been able to put it out of my mind and get on with my research - and lo and behold I have a good submission, someone else writes the narrative and compiles the submission - and at my university they even agreed to fund the purchase of our books (we worried we might be required to provide it at our expense).

Because of the RAE?
Or were they a walking talking idiot before?

Our main guy has been missed because he isn't a walking talking idiot. While he was engrossed in the RAE the other - significantly less competent - research fiends have been fouling things up in all sorts of unlikely ways. The thought that the new system may require even more of his time is just plain worrying.

They got rid of the people who did it before... ran them off.... and the person who was SUPPOSED to do it delegated to the idiot... and yes, that person was an idiot before.

Our highly lovely (non walking, talking idiot) research administrator is gibbering down the corridor post-RAE but she has come up with a great post-RAE exercise:

RAE - What the FEC?

We are all going to tell her the time we spent on it and point out to the University how much money we, as a department, wasted on this (they of course think they did everything).

Our PVC Research actually thanked all the researchers in the University for their hard work both in producing the research and in contributing to the assessment.

We have a new administrator for our Research and Enterprise committee. She sent out an email last week titled:
RAE documents urgently needed

in this case RAE meant Research and Enterprise... and the documents in question were applications for funding support. There was a lot of panic in the halls as folks thought RAE (Research Assessment Exercise) files had been mislaid.
