Could not raise SC chair on the telephone. Sent polite apologetic email (was in class all day - who calls people during class???). Now panicking that I have already doomed myself.

Oh porcupine, take off your crazy hat. You know perfectly well that minor difficulty in getting ahold of you isn't going to doom you. Just think! Tomorrow you will get to talk to the SCC and then you get to relish the idea of your interview all weekend!

Democrituuuuuus!! Porcupiiiiiiine!! Yay! Thank God someone around here has got some good news.

YES!  Congrats to both!

Congrats again to Democritus and Porcupine!

Hurrah! Tis the season for MLA madness. All of the MLA boards are on fire with updates this week. However, any university with bureaucracy that had a November 20 or later deadline will probably be pushing the end of next week before scheduling interviews.

My crazy hat is firmly on!!! Should I call them tomorrow? I said in my email that I would be available all day tomorrow if they needed to talk to me.

Applications in: 3
Applications to go: 3
Phone interviews: 1
Campus invites: 1
Rejections: none yet, but it is early for my field

I just had to share that I am a finalist for tt position at R1 (the first application I submitted). It's my first year on the market and I am ABD, so I am spinning out of control with excitement! The campus visit will not happen until February, and it's all I can think about.  Good luck to everyone during this nail-biting time.

Okay, the chair just emailed me back and said they will call me tomorrow.

Crazy hat... off. Temporarily.

Great reading the good news.

Though it's not related to the job search, I got some good news from my advisor (which makes this bleak job market stuff a little better). She really liked my 3rd chapter. A month ago she approved my 2nd (these were all the product of the last year of work). I'm basically done. There's a fourth wrap chapter, but I have that done. She wants me to defend in March and is pushing for it. (The culture at my school is "keep em here forever").

Congrats to everyone else, and good for you, westcoastgirl!  I remember when my chair finally e-mailed to say that he was proud of my dissertation.  I strongly considered framing it and hanging it right next to the diploma...

Nothing except a possible wikijection on my end, but I have only a few apps out at the moment.  Our CC is hiring several tenure-track folks, and I'm finishing my cover letter for that (I'm currently full-time, not-TT) as soon as grades are in.

Per Our Evil Friend the Wiki, some people have had interview requests at Really Nice Place within the past few days. Some have had rejections. I have... nothing, yet. Rather than checking continually, I spent the day virtually ripping up and reordering the chapter, which was both therapeutic and necessary (and better than ripping a new one in the colleague who sounds like an utter moron answering our shared phone. What the hell is wrong with people who don't know professional phone etiquette?)

Are you kidding? You've got the best deal! Unlike those other poor suckers who were caught off guard, you've got time to prep a little.

People, I've been in multiple search committees and have searched twice myself.

RELAX. We do not drop the person because they are not magically waiting for us by the phone. I've seen all sorts of weird people in the academy but never that one -- "Oh, no. Dr. Porcupine did NOT answer the phone. Let's strike this person from our short-list which we spent a week to assemble!"

We leave a message, expect a call back or a polite email if it seems we are playing too much phone tag. It's fine.

BREATHE. Apply. Think as little as you can of the applications -- the thing that will help you most is your papers, presentations and networking. Not worrying about the applications. Apply, get back to work.

I know, easier said than done but this was your PSA for today from a survivor of the job search:-)

Thanks for the congratulations, everyone. Now I just have to ensure that I make this interview count. I've already done a good amount of research on the place and my department arranged a mock interview for me next week, plus all the information I've garnered from the forums should hopefully stand me in good stead.

Though it wasn't directed at me, this is the kind of advice I find really helpful from being on the forums. Once I'd enjoyed grinning foolishly at my computer for a few minutes and then responded to the interview offer, I went back to focusing on job stuff and my dissertation rather than obsessing too much about the interview.

Oh, I am fine about the interview... once the darn thing is scheduled! The sc chair called me twice on my cell and then once at home with a request that I call back asap in the space of an hour, which was why it was all a bit stressful when I couldn't then get in touch.

Ouch.  Those post-conference interview rejections sting more than the others.  (Especially when one of them shows up in your email Inbox 15 minutes before your first ever Skype interview... does not inspire confidence)

In other news, I got a first-round rejection email yesterday that said they had received 400 applications (400!!!)

Anyway, ... Updated Stats
Applications submitted: 47
Conference Interviews: 9
Post-Conference Interview Rejections: 2
Actual Rejections (with no interview): 7
Wiki-jections: 10
Crickets: 21

Magic 8 Ball interviews foretold: 1 (prediction has not yet come to fruition)
Magic 8 Ball rejections foretold: 2 ("all signs point to 'no'" - so I stopped asking)
