So, bad news, with a silver lining.  I received a rejection from the USGS job that I talked about earlier - the one that first said that I was not qualified, then I was, then I didn't hear anything, then they asked if I was still interested...  The silver lining was that, after I asked for some feedback, I got it.  An HR superhero (superheroine?) sent me a detailed list of what goes into their decision, where I was weak, what my total score was, and the cutoff score for going on to the next stage.  After I sent an e-mail thanking her (of course), she sends me another e-mail with more info about the selection process, as well as mentioning another, similar, job if I'm interested.
So there are wonderful people even in government HR departments :-)

Too bad LL, but hopefully you'll get good news from the job you want.
AOF - I'm sure that you'll kill on your campus interview, so don't worry about the crickets.

Sorry about this outcome, mouseman, but how terrific to actually get some help for the next one - and perhaps it will be an even better fit.  <crosses fingers>

So... I think I'm done. Nothing last year, one on campus this year but nothing else, increasingly bleak market. I'm adjuncting right now, and working on articles, so I know that I could do the job (and well), but it seems so unlikely I'll ever actually get to do the job full time. And I don't believe that there's nothing else I could do that would be fulfilling. I also don't think I can make my family live in this horrible rental house in limbo forever. My spouse is getting a job offer this week for a new and better job, we're talking about buying a house, and I'm looking for some kind of job locally.

Even though everyone on the forums says we all should have known there were no jobs, they told me when I started my PhD that they had a 98% job placement rate, that "everyone who wanted to be a college professor became one." Of course I wasn't wise enough to see then that people like me would be declared "someone who doesn't REALLY want to be a college professor." I also wasn't wise enough to see that somebody had to teach the 400 person lecture classes. And, you know, the economy tanked.

And thus ends my brief career as a "college professor." I wonder what's next?

I just found out that a job I already knew I wasn't going to get was filled by someone ABD. This, after I received a notice that they had received applications from several highly qualified individuals. The language implied they were looking at people who were already professors. This makes at least 3 positions I've applied for that went to someone ABD. Just because they are originally local boys.

This is SO demoralizing.

ann05, I'm also "done"; instead of applying for all and sundry, I'm applying only for academic jobs I really want, in locations I would happily move to (and now that I've been rejected from the only job that would require a move, I'm only in it for jobs that are reasonably local). In the meantime, I'm working in my quite fulfilling, decently paid second career, and living exactly where I want to live, in the house I bought, near my family. PM me if you'd like to chat!!

GM, that's so aggravating.  I am also seeing jobs to go alums and a disproportionate number of "our kind."

Fie upon them!

Don't be too hard on yourself! I know A LOT of folks who couldn't land ANY academic job, so at least you are teaching and adding lines to your c.v.

I know it sucks right now, just try to keep your chin up! I know some folks that would have gladly taught as an adjunct, but ended up in government or nonprofit jobs. Best of luck to you!

Funnily enough, they all were. You wouldn't realize that nearly 1/2 the field are women now would you?

Exactly. It isn't like we get 300 people applying for a position. I wouldn't expect more than 15-20 tops. Quite a few of those won't be eligible in any form or fashion. If I weren't already in a foul mood, this would have put me in one.

Simply put, they suck.  Big time.  In fact, to quote somebody else - "they're made of suck".
