I'd be interested to hear more people's opinions on the ABD to PhD transition for the job search.
This time last year, I was an ABD, one non-PR conference proceeding pub, couple years of TA, 2 solo classes with a teaching award, and a bunch of diss chapters. a very intense and time consuming job search in a minefield of frozen searches turned up a four conference interviews, two short-list interviews in the late spring (neither tt), and one job at a cc. a ton of people in my situation failed to find jobs entirely. This year the degree is behind me, have submitted 4 PR pubs already, another non-PR one, and am teaching a 5/6. I throwing out apps at tt jobs at SLACs I like and wondering if my odds will be much different. I'm suspecting I'll make a few more long lists, not much more

Woo hoo! I just checked my voice mail and had a message from HR (at my last-choice school). Of course, HR is gone for the day, so I'll have to wait until tomorrow to find out if it's for an interview or if they're just requesting more info.
On the one hand, it's in a place I don't want to live, with very few redeeming qualities and probably not many opportunities for hubby. On the other, hey, it's an academic job and a place to start.
I'll be sure to report back after I talk to HR.
It's a phone interview! Hooray!

I got a bit lost reading that, but I'd say that you are a better applicant this year. You've improved and widened your experience across the board.

Is it just in my field, or did job ads dry up on Nov.1st?

I'm in Engineering, I've submitted 8 applications (I went with the focused search approach because I have a post doc position lined up as a fall back) and have only received the "we got your application" emails/letters so far. The waiting is the worst.

Yes, here too. Nothing new and worthwhile this week. I really hope it's not over...

Yes, here too. Nothing new and worthwhile this week. I really hope it's not over... It is the 5th, y'all. Go take a walk. See a movie. Watch the squirrels bury their winter food. Schedule one day (or at most two) to dwell on the job market, then get back to whatever you should be writing for the other six days. Compartmentalization: how to avoid going whacko on the job market.

Good idea! For the past 6 weeks there have been tons of jobs, sometimes many a day. While it's only the 5th, thing do seem to be slowing down. I think I need to compartmentalize my time on these forums :)

There have only been a couple dozen jobs in my field, and so far, I'm only applying to 3. One has been in for a month, and the other two don't have deadlines until January. Haven't seen a new post that mentions my subfield in quite some time now. There were definitely more jobs listed last year. On the other hand, I was also applying a lot more broadly. I just wish I knew whether my current job status was ever going to convert to TT. I'd be much more productive if I weren't wasting time looking for other jobs if I had more confidence that my current one is more or less permanent.
LAME.

I've noticed that the ads seem to come in waves. So don't be surprised if another bunch come out in a week or two.

I've had two emails from colleagues today trying to determine if the listing spree is coming to an end. I'm not complaining, there are about 10 jobs in my subfield, and 6 or so for which I think I am a good candidate. And it is kind of nice to feel like the landscape has been determined. Then again, more could come, and there is always the slew of VAPs in the spring. Or at least one or two.
